Samsung Galaxy S22+ storage is full or the device cannot install updates

Samsung Galaxy S22+ storage is full or the device cannot install updates: large media, downloads, app caches and system-update reserve should be measured before deletion. Scoped to SM-S906*.

The Galaxy S22+ came in 128 and 256 gigabyte versions with no memory card slot, and four years on, with years of photos, chat media and app updates behind it, it is a very common phone to run out of room. The phone's own tool gives the quickest picture: open Settings, Battery and device care, Storage, and look at what is large. Because this phone is older, system data and app caches have grown too, and the number marked System files can seem big; part of it is temporary and part is the operating system itself, which grows with each update.

The checks in more detail

Start with the items that are certain to be safe to remove. The first is the cache. Each app keeps temporary files, and social and streaming apps keep many; go through the largest in Settings, Apps, choose the app, Storage, and tap Clear cache, which is safe and does not delete your data. The second is duplicate and large files: in My Files, Analyze storage lists large files, duplicate files and unused apps, and a few taps release gigabytes.

The third is the Gallery. Photos and videos from four years of use add up, so back them up to Google Photos or OneDrive, confirm that the backup finished and use Free up space, then empty the Trash. Because the S22+ will receive updates for a limited time, it is wise to leave room for them. A big update needs several gigabytes of free space to download and unpack, and a phone with a few hundred megabytes left will fail it.

Uninstall apps that you no longer use, and use the Archive option in the Play Store for large ones. Remove offline downloads from streaming and maps apps. If you keep hitting the limit, consider moving older photos and videos to a computer, a cloud plan or a USB-C flash drive attached through My Files. Restart the phone after clearing to refresh the figures. If the phone shows full when it is not, the system may need a restart or a cache clear; contact Samsung if the figure stays wrong.

Model-specific

What is true of this model and not of its siblings

Updates
An update needs free space to install.
System files
They grow with each update.
Photo editing copies
The S22+ saves edited versions of photos next to the originals, and the Gallery's Remaster and similar tools add copies, so a library you edit heavily can hold two or three versions of each picture. Look at the edited albums and delete the copies you no longer need after you have backed up the originals.
Android 16 updates
The S22+ has received recent major updates, and each update leaves a cache of old files. A restart after an update, and clearing the system cache from the recovery menu if you are comfortable with it, can release a gigabyte or more.
