Maytag washing machines: front-load and top-load faults

A washer that will not start usually has a door or lid not seen as closed, a control lock set or a supply tap closed. A washer that does not drain has a blocked pump filter or hose. A door that stays locked after a cycle is following the safety lock, which releases when the drum has stopped and the water has drained. Shake at spin means the machine is not level or the load is lopsided. Maytag's Extra Power button and its cycle options change run times, so a long cycle is often a setting.

A practical way to sort a Maytag complaint is by when it happens. A fault at the start of a cycle, such as a washer that will not fill, points to the taps, hoses, lid or door. A fault in the middle, such as a stall, points to the water level sensor, the drain or an unbalanced load. A fault at the end, such as clothes that are still soaked, points to the drain pump or the spin. Telling the support agent the moment the fault appears, and what the lights or display showed, shortens the call considerably and often lets them name the part before a technician visits.
