GE Opal ice maker: what the ring colors mean
The GE Opal nugget ice maker has no screen. It shows its status with a ring of light around the round button on the front, and the color and the motion of the ring tell you what the machine is doing. Green flashes when it is turning on or off, blue swishes when it needs water, white shows that it is making ice, idle or defrosting, and yellow shows that it needs cleaning, is cleaning or has finished cleaning.
Most of the time the ring is only reporting a normal step, and nothing needs to be done. The guides on this page explain each color and motion, and they point out the cases where the ring does call for action: a blue ring means that the reservoir needs filling, and a solid yellow ring means that it is time for a descaling cycle, which keeps the nugget ice tasting clean and the machine working well.
If a ring never changes color, flashes for a long time or the Opal does not make ice, unplug it for a minute and plug it back in, then check the water supply and the reservoir. GE's support lines can help with a ring that is stuck, and the serial number on the unit is the first thing that they will ask for.
Why is my Opal ring blue?
A swishing blue ring means that the Opal needs water, so refill the reservoir or check the supply line.
How often should I clean an Opal?
About once a month, or when the ring turns solid yellow, with the cleaning and descaling method in GE's article.
