GE appliance codes: dishwashers, ranges, refrigerators and water heaters

GE publishes fault codes for several product types, and the style changes with the product. Dishwashers show a C code or a short word such as H2O or a leak message, ranges and wall ovens show F codes for the electronic control, the door lock, the temperature sensor and the keypad, and refrigerators use letter codes for the fan, the sensors and the ice maker. GE's hybrid heat-pump water heaters and dehumidifiers have their own sets, and some displays that look like errors, such as the 88 on a dehumidifier at power-up, are normal.

Match the code to the exact appliance, then follow the safe steps on its page: confirm the door is closed, restore power at the breaker for a minute, check water and drain connections on dishwashers and clear anything blocking vents. An F-code that returns means the electronic control, a sensor or the door-lock assembly needs a technician. Keep the model number, which is on the data plate, handy when you call, since GE's answers depend on it.

GE's range codes are the largest group here, and they start with F followed by a number or a letter. F0 and F1 relate to the control, F5, F8 and FF to the control board, F7 to the keypad and F9 and FC to the door lock, while others such as F2, F20 and FD each have their own page. Dishwasher codes begin with C, such as C1 and C2 for drain faults and C3 for a motor fault, and the dehumidifier and water heater codes have their own pages.

Because GE ranges use many near-identical codes, read the display carefully and note whether the code appears on the upper or lower oven. A reset at the breaker is a reasonable first step; a code that returns after it needs a technician.

What does an F code on a GE oven mean?

F codes report a fault in the control, a sensor or the door lock. Cut the power for a minute and, if the code returns, call for service.

Is the 88 on a GE dehumidifier an error?

No, it is a normal display at power-up.

Do GE F codes mean the oven is broken?
