Every Kenmore Elite 721 series range code: what it means and what to do

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F1, F2 or F8 and F1 or F2

A defective upper oven temperature sensor.

Unplug the range before measuring the sensor.

Read the sensor with a meter at room temperature, about 77 degrees Fahrenheit: it should show roughly 1,090 ohms. A reading more than 100 ohms away means the upper sensor is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F10

An upper oven door lock failure.

Unplug the range and check the lock's wiring.

Look at the harness between the upper door lock motor and the relay board and the harness from the lock switches to the oven control board, reseating loose wires and repairing broken ones. Then measure the lock motor: about 2,600 ohms is normal, and infinite resistance means the upper door lock assembly is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F11

A communications error between the oven control board and the cooktop control board.

Unplug the range and check the harness between the two boards.

Reseat loose wires and repair broken ones. If the wiring is good, reset the oven control by pressing Lower Stop, holding Lower Bake and Lower Broil for three seconds, pressing Lower Stop again and repeating the three-second hold. If the code returns, replace the oven control board and repeat the reset, and if it returns again replace the cooktop control board and reset once more.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F16

A lower oven that has sensed more than 650 degrees Fahrenheit in bake or broil.

Unplug the range and note whether the oven is really hot.

If the code shows while the oven is at room temperature, measure the lower sensor, which should read about 1,090 ohms, and replace it if it is off by more than 100 ohms. If the oven truly overheated, a stuck relay on the oven control board is the likely cause and the board is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F19

A lower oven that is not heating.

Check whether the upper oven and the cooktop burners heat.

If nothing heats, the range may be getting only 120 of its 240 volts, so reset both breakers and then check the power cord at the terminal block, reseating loose wires and replacing a damaged cord. If the supply and cord are fine, call a technician, since live voltage checks are dangerous. If only the lower oven fails, check the wiring from the lower bake element to the relay board, then measure the element: about 22 ohms is normal and infinite resistance means it is replaced. With a good element and wiring, measure the lower sensor, about 1,090 ohms, and replace it if it is more than 100 ohms off.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F20

A lower oven door lock failure.

Unplug the range and check the lock's wiring.

Look at the harness between the lower door lock motor and the relay board and the harness from the lock switches to the oven control board, reseating loose wires and repairing broken ones. Then measure the lock motor: about 2,600 ohms is normal, and infinite resistance means the lower door lock assembly is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F3

A stuck key on the oven or the cooktop control, whichever display shows the code.

Look at which display shows F3, the oven or the cooktop.

Unplug the range and check that the ribbon cable from the control panel is seated on that control's board. If it is, press every key from different angles to free the stuck one. If the code returns, unplug the range, disconnect the ribbon cable, restore power and watch: F3 with the cable disconnected means the control board is sensing a key by itself and is replaced, while no code means the control panel is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F4, F5 or F18 and F4 or F5

A defective lower oven temperature sensor.

Unplug the range before measuring the sensor.

Read the sensor with a meter at room temperature, about 77 degrees Fahrenheit: it should show roughly 1,090 ohms. A reading more than 100 ohms away means the lower sensor is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F6

An upper oven that has sensed more than 650 degrees Fahrenheit in bake or broil.

Unplug the range and note whether the oven is really hot.

If the code shows while the oven is at room temperature, measure the upper sensor, which should read about 1,090 ohms, and replace it if it is off by more than 100 ohms. If the oven truly overheated, a stuck relay on the oven control board is the likely cause and the board is replaced.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F9

An upper oven that is not heating.

Check whether the lower oven and the cooktop burners heat.

If nothing heats, the range may be getting only 120 of its 240 volts, so reset both breakers and then check the power cord at the terminal block, reseating loose wires and replacing a damaged cord. If the supply and cord are fine, call a technician, since live voltage checks are dangerous. If only the upper oven fails, check the wiring from the upper bake element to the relay board, then measure the element: about 27 ohms is normal and infinite resistance means it is replaced. With a good element and wiring, measure the upper sensor, about 1,090 ohms, and replace it if it is more than 100 ohms off.

  • The range's CANCEL key was held for 5 seconds with no earlier fault code stored: F0 appears on the range display after someone held CANCEL and nothing else is wrong. Press CANCEL to clear the display and see whether the oven works normally
  • A child or a cleaning cloth held the CANCEL key on the range panel: F0 shows on the display without anyone deliberately asking for it. Check whether anything rests on the CANCEL key and whether the panel is damp
  • A real fault code that has been cleared from the range display: F0 appears but the oven misbehaves as it did before. Note the symptom and use the page for the code that matches it

The chart calls F0 the default F code with no failure: it displays when there are no previous fault codes and you hold the CANCEL key for 5 seconds on the range.

A single press of CANCEL clears F0 from the range. Then run a short bake to confirm it heats normally.

F0 itself needs no part, so a range that shows it and still fails to heat needs the page for its real fault.

F0 (665 model range table).

None; no parts needed.

None.

Do I need a part? No. The chart says no parts are needed.

How is it different from F1? F1 is a defective electronic oven control; F0 is only a report that you held CANCEL with no faults stored.

Disconnect power or unplug the range. Replace the electronic oven control. Parts named: electronic oven control.

  • The electronic oven control on the range has failed: F1 appears on the range display and the oven will not run a normal bake. The chart replaces the control directly, so confirm the code first
  • A power surge that damaged the range's control: F1 followed a storm, an outage or a breaker trip on the range circuit. Note whether other appliances on the range circuit were affected
  • A one-off fault on the range that clears when power is cut: F1 appears once and then does not return afterwards. Cut power to the range for a few minutes and try a short bake

Switch the range off at its breaker or unplug it, and pull it forward from the wall only far enough to reach the connections. The chart says to disconnect power or unplug the range before replacing the control.

The chart does not include this, but it costs nothing and clears a one-off F1 on the range before you buy a control.

The chart's whole instruction for F1 on the range. Match the control to your full model number so it works with the keypad.

F1 (665 model range table).

Electronic oven control.

A screwdriver or nut driver and a wrist strap.

Should I replace the range control before checking the keypad? For F1 the chart goes straight to the control, because F1 already names the electronic oven control as the failed part. If the range instead shows F2/E0 or F2/E5, the keypad is checked first, so read the code twice before you order anything.

Can F1 on the range come from a loose connection? The chart does not list one. It disconnects power and replaces the control, so a cut in power to the range for a few minutes is the only cheap test before buying the part.

Switch off the range at the breaker before you open any panel to reach the control

The electronic oven control is a costly part, so price it against the age of the range before ordering

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F2/E0

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F1

Listed as oven temperature sensor failure or failed electronic oven control board.

Unplug the range for 30 seconds, then plug it back in to restore power. If the code resumes after restoring power, unplug the range and check the resistance through the oven temperature sensor from the electronic oven control board using a multimeter. Your meter should measure around 1,080 ohms of resistance through the oven temperature sensor circuit at room temperature. If resistance is off by more than 200 ohms, check oven temperature sensor resistance directly at the sensor. Replace the oven temperature sensor if resistance is off by more than 200 ohms.

If resistance measured directly at the sensor is okay, then replace the wire harness because a damaged oven temperature sensor wire harness caused the control board to detect the incorrect resistance through the sensor. If the meter measured correct resistance through the sensor wires that connect to the control board, replace the electronic oven control board because it isn't detecting oven temperature sensor resistance accurately. Parts named: oven temperature sensor, oven electronic control board, wire harness.

  • A one-off fault on the 790 range that clears when power is cut for 30 seconds: F1 appears on the range display once and does not return. Unplug the range for 30 seconds, plug it back in and see whether F1 resumes
  • An oven temperature sensor on the 790 range whose circuit resistance is off by more than 200 ohms: F1 appears and the range misjudges its temperature or stops heating. Measure the sensor circuit from the electronic oven control board; the chart expects around 1,080 ohms at room temperature
  • A damaged oven temperature sensor wire harness on the range: The sensor is fine when measured directly but the reading through the circuit is wrong. Measure the resistance directly at the sensor, and replace the wire harness if that reading is okay
  • An electronic oven control board on the range that is not detecting the sensor accurately: The circuit reads about 1,080 ohms and F1 remains. The chart replaces the electronic oven control board if the meter measured correct resistance through the sensor wires

Unplug the range, or switch it off at its breaker, and pull it forward from the wall only as far as you need to reach the oven control. The chart says F1 may clear on the range after a 30 second power-off; if the code resumes, go on to the sensor.

Your meter should read around 1,080 ohms at room temperature. If it is off by more than 200 ohms, measure directly at the range's oven temperature sensor and replace the sensor if that reading is off by more than 200 ohms.

A damaged harness makes the control board read the wrong resistance on the range. If the meter read correct resistance through the sensor wires at the board, the chart replaces the electronic oven control board.

F1 (790 model manual cleaning and self-cleaning range tables).

Oven temperature sensor, oven electronic control board and wire harness.

A multimeter and a screwdriver or nut driver.

What does F1 mean on a Kenmore 790 model manual cleaning and self-cleaning range? An oven temperature sensor failure or a failed electronic oven control board, in the chart's words, on the range.

What should the range's sensor circuit measure? Around 1,080 ohms at room temperature; the chart treats a reading off by more than 200 ohms as a fault.

Let the range cool completely before you reach the sensor, and disconnect power before you measure F1

Do not bake on a range whose sensor reading is wrong, since the control cannot regulate the temperature

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F9

Listed as oven door lock failure.

Unplug the range and secure any loose connections in the wire harness between the oven door lock assembly and the electronic control board. If the wiring connections between the control and the door lock assembly look okay, check the door lock switch by measuring resistance through the switch using a multimeter. Check switch resistance with the switch arm in two positions: pushed in and extended. If the switch is okay, the meter should measure near 0 ohms with the switch pushed in and OL with the switch arm extended. Replace the door lock assembly if the meter measures the same resistance in both tests because the switch isn't detecting the door lock's position.

If the switch is okay, check resistance through the lock motor. Replace the door lock assembly if the meter measures infinite resistance through the lock motor. Parts named: oven door lock assembly, wire harness.

  • A loose connection in the wire harness between the oven door lock assembly and the electronic control board on the 790 range: F9 appears on the range display and the door will not lock or unlock. Unplug the oven and secure any loose connections in the door lock harness
  • A damaged wire harness on the range's door lock: The connections look fine but a wire is worn or burnt. Replace the wire harness if it is damaged
  • A door lock switch on the range that does not detect the lock position: The meter reads the same resistance with the switch arm pushed in and extended. Measure the switch in both positions; the chart expects near 0 ohms pushed in and OL extended
  • A lock motor on the range that measures infinite resistance: The switch is okay and the lock motor never moves. Measure the resistance through the lock motor with the meter

Unplug the range, or switch it off at its breaker, and pull it forward from the wall only as far as you need to reach the oven control. Then secure any loose connections in the wire harness between the oven door lock assembly and the electronic control board, and replace the harness if it is damaged.

If the wiring looks okay, measure the switch on the range with the switch arm pushed in and then extended. A good switch reads near 0 ohms pushed in and OL extended; the same reading in both means the switch isn't detecting the lock position, so replace the door lock assembly.

Measure the resistance through the lock motor on the range. The chart replaces the door lock assembly if it measures infinite resistance.

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F1

Listed as defective electronic oven control (EOC).

Disconnect power or unplug the wall oven. Replace the electronic oven control (EOC). Parts named: electronic oven control (EOC).

  • The electronic oven control (EOC) on the wall oven has failed: F1 appears on the wall oven display and the oven will not run a normal bake. The chart replaces the control directly, so confirm the code first
  • A power surge that damaged the wall oven's control: F1 followed a storm, an outage or a breaker trip on the wall oven circuit. Note whether other appliances on the wall oven circuit were affected
  • A one-off fault on the wall oven that clears when power is cut: F1 appears once and then does not return afterwards. Cut power to the wall oven for a few minutes and try a short bake

Switch the wall oven off at its breaker, since a built-in oven is usually hard-wired and may have no plug to pull. The chart says to disconnect power or unplug the wall oven before replacing the control.

The chart does not include this, but it costs nothing and clears a one-off F1 on the wall oven before you buy a control.

The chart's whole instruction for F1 on the wall oven. Match the control to your full model number so it works with the keypad.

F1 (665 model wall oven table).

Electronic oven control (EOC).

A screwdriver or nut driver and a wrist strap.

Should I replace the wall oven control before checking the keypad? For F1 the chart goes straight to the control, because F1 already names the electronic oven control (EOC) as the failed part. If the wall oven instead shows F2/E0 or F2/E5, the keypad is checked first, so read the code twice before you order anything.

Can F1 on the wall oven come from a loose connection? The chart does not list one. It disconnects power and replaces the control, so a cut in power to the wall oven for a few minutes is the only cheap test before buying the part.

Switch off the wall oven at the breaker before you open any panel to reach the control

The electronic oven control (EOC) is a costly part, so price it against the age of the wall oven before ordering

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F3/E0

Listed as oven temperature sensor defective or an open oven temperature sensor circuit.

Disconnect power or unplug the wall oven. Reconnect the oven temperature sensor wire harness connection if loose. Measure the oven temperature sensor resistance using a volt/ohm meter. Parts named: oven temperature sensor, Wire harness, Electronic oven control (EOC).

  • A loose connection on the wall oven's oven temperature sensor wire harness: F3/E0 appears on the wall oven display: Defective oven temperature sensor or an open oven temperature sensor circuit. Disconnect power and reconnect the F3/E0 sensor wire harness connection if it is loose
  • An oven temperature sensor that does not measure 1,080 ohms at 70 degrees F on the wall oven: The sensor reads open circuit, far above the expected 1,080 ohms. Measure the wall oven sensor behind F3/E0 with a volt/ohm meter at room temperature
  • A damaged wire harness on the wall oven's sensor circuit: The connector is seated but a wire on the F3/E0 sensor circuit is burnt, pinched or open. Replace the wall oven wire harness for F3/E0 if it is damaged
  • A failed electronic oven control (EOC): The sensor measures 1,080 ohms and the harness is sound but the code remains. For F3/E0 the chart replaces the electronic oven control if the sensor and the harness are okay

Switch the wall oven off at its breaker, since a built-in oven is usually hard-wired and may have no plug to pull. Let the oven cool completely before you reach for the F3/E0 sensor inside the cavity.

Check the harness to the oven temperature sensor on the wall oven for burnt or pinched wires before you measure anything for F3/E0.

For F3/E0 the chart expects 1,080 ohms at room temperature (70 degrees F). Replace the wall oven sensor if it does not; if it does, and the harness is okay, replace the electronic oven control (EOC).

Oven temperature sensor, wire harness and electronic oven control (EOC).

A volt/ohm meter and a screwdriver or nut driver.

An open sensor circuit means the wall oven cannot read its temperature, so do not bake until it is fixed

Let the wall oven cool completely and switch it off at the breaker before you measure the sensor for F3/E0

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F3/E1

Listed as oven temperature sensor defective or a shorted oven temperature circuit.

Disconnect power or unplug the wall oven. Reconnect the oven temperature sensor wire harness if loose. Measure the oven temperature sensor resistance using a volt/ohm meter. If the resistance isn't 1080 ohms at room temperature (70 degrees F), replace the oven temperature sensor. If the oven temperature sensor resistance and wire harness connections are okay, replace the electronic oven control (EOC). Parts named: oven temperature sensor, Wire harness, Electronic oven control (EOC).

  • A loose connection on the wall oven's oven temperature sensor wire harness: F3/E1 appears on the wall oven display: Defective oven temperature sensor or a shorted oven temperature circuit. Disconnect power and reconnect the F3/E1 sensor wire harness connection if it is loose
  • An oven temperature sensor that does not measure 1,080 ohms at 70 degrees F on the wall oven: The sensor reads shorted, near zero ohms instead of 1,080. Measure the wall oven sensor behind F3/E1 with a volt/ohm meter at room temperature

A shorted sensor circuit means the wall oven cannot read its temperature, so do not bake until it is fixed

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F4/E1

Listed as meat probe malfunction - shorted.

Disconnect power or unplug the wall oven. Unplug the meat probe and measure the resistance of the meat probe using a volt/ohm meter. If the resistance isn't 59000 ohms at room temperature, replace the meat probe. If the resistance of the meat probe is okay, insert the meat probe in the jack and check for a firm connection between the probe and jack in the oven. If the jack is damaged or worn out, replace it. Reconnect the wire harness connection on the meat probe jack if loose. Parts named: meat probe, Meat probe jack, Wire harness.

  • A meat probe that does not measure 59,000 ohms at room temperature on the wall oven: F4/E1 appears on the wall oven display and a probe cook will not run. Unplug the meat probe and measure its resistance with a volt/ohm meter
  • A meat probe that is not seated firmly in the jack in the wall oven cavity: The probe measures normally but the code appears when it is plugged in. Insert the probe in the jack and check for a firm connection
  • A meat probe jack that is damaged or worn out: The jack is loose, cracked or discolored where the probe plugs in. Replace the jack if it is damaged or worn out
  • A loose or damaged wire harness on the wall oven's meat probe jack: The jack is fine but the wire behind it is loose. Reconnect the harness connection on the jack and replace the harness if damaged

Switch the wall oven off at its breaker, since a built-in oven is usually hard-wired and may have no plug to pull. Let the oven cool before you reach into the cavity.

The chart expects 59,000 ohms at room temperature. Replace the probe if the reading is different.

Insert the probe and check for a firm connection. Replace a damaged or worn jack, reconnect a loose harness on the jack and replace a damaged harness.

Meat probe, meat probe jack and wire harness.

What should the meat probe measure? 59,000 ohms at room temperature (the chart also writes it as 59000 ohms).

What is replaced first? The meat probe, if its resistance is wrong; then the jack and harness if the probe is okay.

Let the wall oven cool and switch it off at the breaker before you reach the jack

Do not use a probe that reads shorted, since the control cannot judge the food temperature

Kenmore Elite 721 series range code F5/E0

Listed as door is open, but latch is locked (door switch communicates, an open door, but latch switch communicates a locked door),.

Test the oven door switch operation using the oven light.

Open and close the oven door to see if the oven door switch turns the oven light on and off when the oven door is opened and closed. If the oven door switch is defective, replace it. Disconnect power or unplug the oven. on the oven door lock assembly wire harness. Check the door lock assembly for visible damage and replace it if broken. Parts named: oven door switch, Oven door lock assembly, Wire harness.

  • An oven door switch on the wall oven that does not turn the oven light on and off: F5/E0 appears and the light does not respond when the door is opened and closed. Open and close the door and see whether the oven light turns on and off
  • A loose wire on the wall oven's oven door lock assembly wire harness: F5/E0 appears on the wall oven display and the door will not lock or unlock. Disconnect power and reconnect any loose wires on the door lock assembly harness
  • A damaged wire harness on the wall oven's door lock assembly: The connector is seated but the wire is worn or burnt. Replace the wire harness if it is damaged
  • A door lock assembly on the wall oven that is visibly damaged: The lock or latch looks bent, broken or burnt. Check the door lock assembly for visible damage and replace it if broken

Open and close the wall oven door and see whether the door switch turns the oven light on and off. If the light does not respond, replace the door switch.

Switch the wall oven off at its breaker, since a built-in oven is usually hard-wired and may have no plug to pull. The door lock assembly wiring is under mains power until then.

Check both ends of the harness on the wall oven for a wire that is pinched or burnt.

The chart names the oven door lock assembly and the wire harness, and the oven door switch, as the parts for F5/E0 on the wall oven.

Oven door switch, oven door lock assembly and wire harness.

Do not run a self-clean cycle on the wall oven until the door lock works, because the oven reaches a very high temperature

Switch off the wall oven at the breaker before you touch the door lock assembly wiring

Kenmore Elite 721 range error codes

Kenmore's Elite 721 series ranges, electric and gas, show F codes for faults in the oven control, the temperature sensor, the door lock and the cooktop. The page lists the codes for the series. Because the same code can have a different meaning on another Kenmore range family, use this page only if your model number begins with 721.

Write down the code and clear it by pressing the Clear or Off key and, if it returns, switching the range off at the breaker for a minute. A sensor code may show that the oven is not reaching temperature, so put an oven thermometer inside and compare. A door lock code needs a check of the latch and, after a self-clean, a wait for the oven to cool. Gas models should be treated with care, and you should leave the house and call your gas supplier if you smell gas.

The model and serial numbers are on the frame behind the storage drawer or on the oven door frame. Kenmore parts are sold through Sears PartsDirect, and the model number finds the right one.

Because the 721 series covers both electric and gas ranges, a code can have a different cause on each. On an electric model, look at the element and the 240 volt supply. On a gas model, look at the igniter and the burner, and use only the safe checks the manual lists. If a burner clicks but will not light, switch it off and wait, and never use a match near a gas leak. A technician can test the igniter or the spark module quickly with the model number.

A range has more parts that can fail than most appliances: the surface elements or burners, the oven bake and broil elements or igniter, the control board, the temperature sensor, the door lock and the cooling fan. The F codes in this table point to one of them. Reading the part that a row names, and whether it is electric or gas, tells you what is being tested, and it helps you decide what to check from the front and what to leave to a technician.

Electric ranges depend on a 240 volt supply to two legs. If an element heats weakly or not at all, check that both breakers of the pair are on and that the plug is firmly seated in the receptacle behind the range. A burner switch or an infinite switch on the cooktop can fail on its own, so test each burner separately. In an oven, a bake element that has broken shows a visible gap or blister, and an oven that heats unevenly may have a failing sensor.

Gas ranges use an igniter that glows to open the gas valve, or a spark module that clicks. A weak igniter delays lighting or leaves the oven cold. If a burner clicks but does not light, clean the burner ports and dry the cap before testing again. Never use the oven to heat the room, and never leave a lit burner unattended. A smell of gas at any time is a reason to leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

If your range is the gas version, a few extra checks apply. The igniter should glow orange within a minute when the oven is switched on, and the gas valve opens only when it draws enough current. A weak igniter delays lighting, and the display may show a heating code. Gas appliances should be serviced only by a qualified technician, and a smell of gas means you should leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

Self-cleaning cycles raise the oven well above normal cooking temperatures, and they are a common moment for codes to appear. Remove racks and loose spills first, run the cycle when the kitchen is ventilated and keep pets and birds out of the room. Do not interrupt a cycle by forcing the door; wait for the lock to release. If a code appears during a clean, let the oven cool completely and try a normal bake before you try another clean, so that you learn whether the oven's basic heating still works.

A range is also the appliance most affected by installation. A range that is not level bakes unevenly, a range pushed too close to a wall can overheat the cabinet and a loose connection at the terminal block can show as erratic heating. If your range was recently moved or serviced, tell the technician what was done, and take a photograph of the back of the range if you can reach it safely.

What does the 721 mean?

It is the first part of the model number for this Elite range series.

Can I fix an oven sensor code myself?

A technician should replace the sensor; you can check it with a thermometer.

Is the code the same on gas and electric?

Not always; check the row for your fuel.
