Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code AF or F-30
A restriction in the exhaust airflow.
Clear the exhaust duct to the outside of the house.
- A restricted exhaust air duct to the outside of the home: AF or F-30 appears and the dryer takes far longer than usual. Unplug the dryer and clear the exhaust air duct system
- A clogged vent hood flap or a crushed duct: Air flow at the outside vent is weak or barely felt. Look at the outside vent and the duct run for a crushed section
- A lint screen that is clogged or filmy: The lint screen is dull with fabric softener film. Clean the lint screen as part of the airflow check
The chart says exhaust air flow to the outside is restricted, so the dryer must be disconnected before the duct is detached.
Disconnect the duct at the dryer and clear it right through to the outside vent, including any elbows.
Make sure the flap opens freely when the dryer runs, and that nothing such as a bird's nest blocks it.
AF or F-30 (Oasis table).
None.
A vent brush or vacuum, a screwdriver or nut driver for the duct clamp.
What does AF or F-30 mean on a Kenmore Oasis dryer? An exhaust air flow restriction, in the chart's words.
How is F:30 on the Elite different? The Elite chart starts with the lint screen and fabric softener buildup before the duct.
What if the duct is clear? Check the lint screen and the blower fan, since the Oasis chart's F-45 and F-46 codes cover the fan.
Stop using the dryer until the duct is cleared, because a restricted exhaust is a fire risk
Disconnect power before you detach the exhaust duct
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:01
A failure of the main electronic control board.
Unplug the dryer for five minutes.
Plug it back in, and if the code returns replace the main electronic control board.
- A fault on the main electronic control board that clears when the board resets: F:01 or F-01 appears and the dryer will not run a normal cycle. Unplug the dryer for 5 minutes, plug it back in and see whether the code returns
- A control board fault that survives a restart: F:01 comes back each time the dryer is plugged in again. The chart replaces the main electronic control board in that case
- A voltage spike that disturbed the control board: The code showed up after lightning, a blackout or a tripped breaker. Ask whether other appliances on the same circuit misbehaved
Use the plug, not just the controls, and leave it out for the full five minutes so the board resets.
A code that stays away after the trial run was a one-time glitch, and nothing more is needed.
The chart names the main electronic control board as the only part for F:01, on both the Elite and the Oasis.
F:01 (Elite) or F-01 (Oasis).
Main electronic control board.
A screwdriver or nut driver and a wrist strap.
Stop and unplug the dryer if there is a burning smell from the console or the back panel
Boards are expensive, so weigh the price against how old the dryer is before you buy one
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:02 (Elite)
A keypad failure on the Elite dryer's user interface.
Press the keys in the console to see whether one is stuck.
A stuck button on one of the two user interface control assemblies in the console causes this. If it cannot be freed, the assembly with the stuck button is replaced.
- A button is stuck on the keypad of one of the two user interface control assemblies: F:02 appears on an Elite dryer and one button feels jammed or does not spring back. Press each button on both console assemblies and see which one stays down
- Moisture or residue that holds a button down: The console is damp or sticky and a key responds erratically. Dry and clean the console and try the stuck button again
- A console assembly with a jammed, shorted button: One button stays down no matter how you work it. The chart replaces the user interface control assembly with the stuck button
The Elite console holds two user interface control assemblies. The chart says a button is stuck on one of them, so press every key on both.
Work the key gently and clean around it. A film of moisture or residue can hold a key down.
On the Elite, the chart lists a single part for F:02: the console's user interface assembly.
F:02 (Elite table).
User interface control assembly.
A screwdriver or nut driver.
How many assemblies does the Elite have? Two, in the console, according to the chart.
How is the Oasis F-02 different? A single user interface board sits in the Oasis console, so that board is the part the chart replaces.
Unplug the dryer if liquid has run behind the console
The Elite has two user interface assemblies, so replace only the one with the stuck button
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:20
A failed heater relay on the main control board.
Replace the main electronic control board, which carries the heater relay.
- The heater relay on the main electronic control board has failed: F:20 or F-20 appears and the dryer tumbles but does not heat, or the heat will not switch off. The chart names the relay on the board, so the board is the part to confirm
- A spike that burned out the relay: The code arrived after a thunderstorm, power cut or breaker trip. Check whether other electronics on that circuit were hit as well
- A one-off fault that clears when the board resets: The code appears once and does not come back. Unplug the dryer for several minutes and run a short cycle
Use the plug and leave it out for several minutes, which resets the control if the fault was a one-off.
Watch whether the dryer heats and switches off as it should. If it does, no repair is needed.
The chart says the heater relay on the main electronic control board failed, so the board is the only part named. Match it to your model number.
F:20 (Elite) or F-20 or F-21 (Oasis).
Main electronic control board.
A screwdriver or nut driver and a wrist strap.
What about F-21 on the Oasis? The Oasis table lists F-20 and F-21 together with the same instruction.
Unplug the dryer before opening the back panel, because the relay switches mains-voltage heat
If the dryer heats constantly, unplug it at once and do not run it again until the board is replaced
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-20 or F-21
A failed heater relay on the main control board, shown as F-20 or F-21.
Replace the main electronic control board, which carries the heater relay.
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-22 (Oasis)
An exhaust thermistor failure on the Oasis dryer.
The exhaust thermistor should read about 10,000 ohms at room temperature, and a defective one is replaced.
- The exhaust thermistor has gone open and reads far above its normal resistance: F-22 appears on an Oasis dryer and the temperature control stops working or the heat cuts out early. Unplug the dryer and measure the exhaust thermistor; it should be about 10,000 ohms at room temperature
- A broken wire or a connector that has backed out of the exhaust thermistor plug: The reading changes when the thermistor wire is moved or the plug is wiggled. Check the thermistor wiring and its plug for a break before you order a part
- A thermistor that has aged out of range: The reading is far from the expected 10,000 ohms with the dryer cold. Replace the exhaust thermistor if it is defective
The exhaust thermistor sits in the airflow leaving the drum, so it stays hot after a cycle and can burn.
The chart says it should measure about 10,000 ohms at room temperature. Note the reading, because an open thermistor reads far higher and a good one reads close to that figure.
The chart names the thermistor as the only part for F-22 on the Oasis, so the control board is left in place.
Thermistor (exhaust).
A multimeter and a screwdriver or nut driver.
Is F-22 the open one? On the Elite table the matching code F:22 is the open thermistor. The Oasis chart words F-22 and F-23 the same way and gives both the same check.
Is the sensor called the same thing on the Elite? The Elite chart calls it the outlet thermistor; the Oasis chart calls it the exhaust thermistor.
Unplug the dryer and let it cool before you reach the thermistor, which sits where the exhaust air leaves the drum
Do not run the dryer without a working exhaust thermistor, because it is one of the sensors that guards against overheating
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:22 (Elite)
An open outlet thermistor on the Elite dryer, the sensor that reads the exhaust air.
The thermistor should read about 10,000 ohms. A defective one is replaced.
- The outlet thermistor is electrically open: F:22 appears on an Elite dryer and the temperature control stops working. Unplug the dryer and measure the outlet thermistor; it should be about 10,000 ohms
- A broken wire or connector at the outlet thermistor: The reading is open only when the wire is moved. Check the thermistor wiring for a break before you order a part
- A thermistor that has drifted out of range: The reading is far from the expected 10,000 ohms. Replace the outlet thermistor if it is defective
The outlet thermistor sits in the exhaust path, which stays hot after a cycle, so wait until it is comfortable to touch.
The control detects an electrically open outlet thermistor for F:22. The chart says the reading should be about 10,000 ohms.
The chart names the outlet thermistor as the only part for F:22 on the Elite.
Outlet thermistor.
Unplug the dryer and let it cool before you reach the thermistor
Do not run the dryer without a working outlet thermistor, because it protects against overheating
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-23 (Oasis)
An exhaust thermistor failure on the Oasis dryer, in the shorted state.
The exhaust thermistor should read about 10,000 ohms at room temperature, and a defective one is replaced.
- The exhaust thermistor has shorted and reads far below its normal resistance: F-23 appears on an Oasis dryer and the drying temperature is misread. Unplug the dryer and measure the exhaust thermistor; a shorted one reads near zero instead of about 10,000 ohms
- A thermistor wire whose insulation has worn through and touches the metal: The reading is near zero and the wire runs against a sharp edge. Look along the lead for a bare spot and for a wire squashed by the panel
- A thermistor that has failed internally: The lead is intact and the reading is still far from 10,000 ohms. Replace the exhaust thermistor if it is defective
Give it time first; the exhaust thermistor sits in the hot air leaving the drum.
A short often comes from wire insulation rubbed through against metal, which is cheaper to repair than a sensor.
The chart says about 10,000 ohms at room temperature and names the thermistor as the only part for F-23 on the Oasis.
Thermistor (exhaust).
Is F-23 the shorted one? On the Elite table the matching code F:23 is the shorted thermistor. The Oasis chart words F-22 and F-23 the same way and gives both the same check.
What should a good thermistor read? About 10,000 ohms at room temperature; a shorted sensor reads far below that.
Unplug the dryer and let it cool before you reach the exhaust path, since it stays hot after a cycle
A shorted sensor can mean the dryer misjudges its temperature, so do not run it until the reading is right
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:23 (Elite)
A shorted outlet thermistor on the Elite dryer, the sensor that reads the exhaust air.
The thermistor should read about 10,000 ohms. A defective one is replaced.
- The outlet thermistor is electrically shorted: F:23 appears on an Elite dryer and the temperature control stops working. Unplug the dryer and measure the outlet thermistor; it should be about 10,000 ohms
- A pinched or shorted thermistor wire: The reading is near zero and the wire is squashed against metal. Check the wiring for a short before you order a part
- A thermistor that has failed in a shorted state: The reading is far below the expected 10,000 ohms. Replace the outlet thermistor if it is defective
The outlet thermistor sits in the exhaust path, which stays hot after a cycle, so wait until it is comfortable to touch.
The control detects an electrically shorted outlet thermistor for F:23. The chart says the reading should be about 10,000 ohms.
The chart names the outlet thermistor as the only part for F:23 on the Elite.
Outlet thermistor.
Unplug the dryer and let it cool before you reach the thermistor
Do not run the dryer without a working outlet thermistor, because it protects against overheating
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-24 or F-25
An inlet thermistor failure on the Oasis dryer.
Unplug the dryer and check the harness between the main board and the inlet thermistor.
Reseat loose wires or replace a damaged harness. Then measure the thermistor: near 50,000 ohms at room temperature is healthy, and infinite or near-zero resistance means the inlet thermistor and high-limit thermostat assembly is replaced.
- A loose or damaged wire harness between the main electronic control board and the inlet thermistor: F-24 or F-25 appears on an Oasis dryer and the heat control stops working. Unplug the dryer and check the harness connections between the board and the thermistor
- An inlet thermistor reading infinite or near zero ohms: The wiring is fine and the reading is far from 50,000 ohms. Measure the thermistor; the chart expects near 50,000 ohms at room temperature
- A failed inlet thermistor/high limit thermostat assembly: The reading is open circuit or shorted to zero ohms. The chart replaces the assembly if the reading is infinite or near zero
You should measure near 50,000 ohms at room temperature. A reading of infinite or near zero ohms is a failed thermistor.
The chart names this assembly as the only part for F-24 and F-25 on the Oasis.
F-24 or F-25 (Oasis table).
Inlet thermistor/high limit thermostat assembly.
What do F-24 and F-25 mean on a Kenmore Oasis dryer? An inlet thermistor failure, in the chart's words.
The thermistor and high limit thermostat are one assembly, so do not bypass either
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:25
A shorted inlet thermistor, the sensor that reads the air entering the drum.
The thermistor should read about 50,000 ohms, and a defective one is replaced. On this dryer the inlet thermistor is built into the high-limit thermostat, so the two are replaced together.
- The inlet thermistor is electrically shorted: F:25 appears on an Elite dryer and the heat control stops working. Unplug the dryer and measure the inlet thermistor; it should be about 50,000 ohms
- A pinched or shorted thermistor wire: The reading is near zero and the wire touches metal. Check the wiring for a short before you order a part
- A thermistor that has failed in a shorted state: The reading is far below the expected 50,000 ohms. Replace the high-limit thermostat and inlet thermistor if it is defective
The inlet thermistor sits in the heater area, which stays hot after a cycle, so wait until it is cool enough to touch.
The control detects an electrically shorted inlet thermistor for F:25. The chart says the reading should be about 50,000 ohms.
The chart notes that the inlet thermistor is combined with the high-limit thermostat on this dryer, so they are replaced as one part.
High-limit thermostat/inlet thermistor.
The inlet thermistor is combined with the high-limit thermostat, so do not bypass it
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-26
A drive motor failure.
Unplug the dryer and check the wiring between the main board and the drive motor.
If the connections are sound, replace the drive motor.
- Loose or damaged wiring between the main electronic control board and the drive motor: F-26 appears on an Oasis dryer and the drum does not turn. Unplug the dryer and check the wiring connections between the board and the motor
- A failed drive motor: The wiring connections are sound and the drum still does not turn. The chart replaces the drive motor if the wiring connections are sound
- A jammed drum that stops the motor: The drum feels stiff or will not turn by hand. Spin the drum by hand with the dryer unplugged
Open the cabinet only after the plug is out of the wall, and keep that plug in view while you work.
at both ends and look for a worn or burnt harness along its whole length.
The chart names the drive motor as the only part for F-26 on the Oasis.
Drive motor.
Is it on the Elite too? No. The Elite table does not list F:26.
Unplug the dryer before you check any of the wiring
The drive motor is a heavy part; consider a technician if you have not opened this dryer before
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:28 and F:29
A failure of the moisture sensor.
Unplug the dryer and check the sensor's wiring.
If the connections are sound, replace the moisture sensor.
- Loose or damaged wiring connections on the moisture sensor: F:28 or F-28 appears and auto-dry cycles end early or run too long. Unplug the dryer and check the wiring connections on the moisture sensor
- A failed moisture sensor: The wiring connections are sound and the code remains. The chart replaces the moisture sensor if the wiring connections are sound
- A sensor coated with fabric softener residue: The sensor bars in the drum look dull or filmy. Clean the sensor bars and see whether the code returns
Reseat each connector on the sensor and look along the wire for one that is pinched or corroded.
A film of fabric softener can stop the sensor reading dampness properly, so wipe the bars with a soft cloth.
The chart names the moisture sensor as the only part for F:28 and F:29 on both dryers.
F:28 or F:29 (Elite), F-28 or F29 (Oasis).
Moisture sensor.
A screwdriver or nut driver and a soft cloth.
What does the moisture sensor do? It tells the control how damp the load is so an auto-dry cycle can end at the right time.
Unplug the dryer before touching the sensor wiring
F:29 and F-29 are listed with the same instruction on the same sensor
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:30
Restricted airflow through the dryer.
Clean the lint screen.
If you use fabric softener sheets, wash the screen with water and a soft brush to remove the film they leave. Then clear any clog from the exhaust duct all the way to the outside of the house.
- A lint screen clogged with lint: F:30 appears and the dryer takes far longer than usual. Clean the lint from the lint screen and try again
- Fabric softener sheet buildup on the lint screen: The screen looks filmy and water beads on it instead of soaking through. Wash the lint screen with water and a soft-bristled brush
- A clog or restriction in the exhaust air duct system: Air flow at the outside vent is weak and the vent hood flap barely lifts. Clear any clog or restriction from the exhaust air duct system to the outside
Pull the screen out and remove all the lint, including the lint that collects in the housing under it.
Use water and a soft-bristled brush to remove fabric softener buildup; a filmy screen restricts the air even when it looks clean.
Disconnect the duct at the dryer and clear it all the way to the outside vent; the chart names no part for F:30.
A soft-bristled brush and a vent brush or vacuum for the duct.
Is it a part failure? No. The chart names no part; the fix is cleaning the lint screen and the exhaust duct.
Why wash the lint screen? Fabric softener sheets leave a film on the screen that restricts airflow.
How is the Oasis AF or F-30 different? The Oasis code is worded as an exhaust air flow restriction and goes straight to the duct; it has its own page.
Stop using the dryer until the exhaust is cleared, because restricted airflow is a fire risk as well as a cause of F:30
Disconnect power before you detach the exhaust duct
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:31
A low voltage on the L2 leg of the 240 volt supply, below 30 volts.
Check the dryer's breakers at the panel.
Reset the L2 breaker if it has tripped, then unplug the dryer and check the power cord's connections at the terminal block, reseating loose wires and replacing a damaged cord. An electrician should check the 240 volt supply.
- A tripped L2 breaker in the house circuit breakers for the dryer: F:31 or F-31 appears and the dryer tumbles but does not heat. Look at the dryer's breakers in the panel and switch the L2 breaker back on if it has tripped
- Power cord wires working loose at the terminal block: The terminal block connections look burnt or slack. Unplug the dryer and check the power cord connections on the terminal block
- A worn power cord: The cord shows cracks or burn marks, or sits loose in the plug end. Fit a new power cord if this one is worn
- A problem with the 240 volt supply: The breakers and the cord are fine and the code remains. Have an electrician check the 240 volt power supply for the dryer
The chart says the L2 leg of 240 volt power is below 30 volts. A tripped half of the double breaker leaves the dryer tumbling but not heating.
at the terminal block and replace the power cord if it is damaged or worn.
If the breaker keeps tripping or the cord is fine, the fault is in the supply.
F:31 (Elite) or F-31 (Oasis).
Power cord.
A screwdriver or nut driver; an electrician's voltmeter for the supply.
Who checks the supply? An electrician, according to the chart.
Stop and unplug the dryer if the cord or the terminal block is hot or burnt
Leave the 240 volt supply to an electrician, as the chart says; do not probe mains voltage unless you are qualified
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-40
A communication error between the main control board and the blower motor control board.
Unplug the dryer and check the harness between the two boards.
A blown thermal fuse cuts power to the blower board and produces this code, so measure the fuse and replace it if it reads infinite resistance. Then check the wiring from the blower motor to its control board and see whether the blower fan spins freely, clearing any clog in the fan housing and replacing a damaged fan. With sound wiring, fuse and fan, replace the blower motor control board.
- A harness fault between the blower control board and the main board: The Oasis shows F-40 and the blower stays silent. Unplug the dryer and inspect the wiring that links the two boards
- A blown thermal fuse that stops the blower motor control board getting power: The blower control board is dead because the fuse is open. Check the resistance of the thermal fuse; infinite resistance means it is blown
- A loose or damaged harness between the blower motor and the blower motor control board: The fuse is good and the blower still does not run. Check the wire harness connections between the blower motor and its control board
- A blower fan that is clogged or damaged: The fan does not spin freely when turned by hand. Check that the blower fan spins freely and clear any clog or restriction in the fan housing
- A failed blower motor control board: The wiring, the thermal fuse and the blower fan are all okay. The chart replaces the blower motor control board last
A blown thermal fuse prevents the blower motor control board getting power, which triggers F-40. Replace the thermal fuse if you measure infinite resistance.
Check the harness between the blower motor and its board, and that the fan spins freely; replace the fan if it is damaged, and the board only if everything else is okay.
Blower motor control board, blower fan, wire harness and thermal fuse.
Can a blown fuse cause it? Yes. A blown thermal fuse prevents the blower motor control board from getting power and triggers F-40.
Unplug the dryer before touching the fuse, the harness or the blower
A blown thermal fuse usually means something overheated, so find out why before you fit a new one
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-41
A blower motor failure.
Unplug the dryer and check the wiring between the blower motor and its control board.
Reseat loose wires or replace a damaged harness, then check that the blower fan spins freely, clearing a clog in the fan housing and replacing a damaged fan. If the fan is fine, replace the blower motor control board.
- A loose or damaged wire harness between the blower motor and the blower motor control board: F-41 appears on an Oasis dryer and the blower does not run or runs badly. Unplug the dryer and check the harness between the blower motor and its control board
- A blower fan that is clogged or damaged: The fan does not spin freely when turned by hand. Check that the blower fan spins freely and clear any clog or restriction in the fan housing
- A failed blower motor control board: The harness and the fan are both okay and the code remains. The chart replaces the blower motor control board if the blower fan is okay
If it does not, check for a clog or restriction in the fan housing and replace the blower fan if it is damaged.
The chart puts the blower motor control board last for F-41, after the harness and the blower fan have been checked.
Blower fan, blower motor control board and wire harness.
Does F-41 check the thermal fuse? No. The thermal fuse check is part of F-40 and F-44.
Unplug the dryer before touching the harness or the blower
The blower motor control board is a costly part, so check the fan and the harness first
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-42 or F-43
An undervoltage failure.
Unplug the dryer and check the power cord at the terminal block.
Reseat loose wires or replace a damaged cord, and have an electrician check the supply voltage to the dryer.
- Power cord connections at the terminal block that have loosened: An Oasis dryer shows F-42 or F-43 because the blower control sees too little voltage. Unplug the dryer and check the power cord connections on the terminal block
- A power cord in poor condition: Cracks, scorching or a slack plug end are visible on the cord. Replace a cord that is damaged
- A supply voltage that is too low: The connections are sound and the code still remains. Have an electrician check the power supply voltage to the dryer
at the terminal block; a loose terminal connection can drop the voltage under load.
The chart names the power cord as the only part for F-42 and F-43, so the dryer's boards are left in place.
If the cord and the terminal connections are good, the supply is the next thing to check.
F-42 or F-43 (Oasis table).
Power cord.
A screwdriver or nut driver; an electrician's voltmeter for the supply.
What do F-42 and F-43 mean on a Kenmore Oasis dryer? An undervoltage failure, in the chart's words.
Stop and unplug the dryer if the cord or the terminal block is hot or burnt
As the chart says, an electrician should check the supply voltage; only a qualified person should test mains voltage
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-45
A failure of the blower motor speed sensor.
Check the wiring between the blower motor and its control board.
Reseat loose wires or replace a damaged harness. A clogged exhaust vent can restrict fan speed and trigger F-45, so check the vent. Then see whether the blower fan spins freely, and replace the fan only if it spins freely and the vent is clear.
- A loose or damaged wire harness between the blower motor and the blower motor control board: F-45 appears on an Oasis dryer and the blower speed is not being read. Unplug the dryer and check the harness between the blower motor and its control board
- A clogged exhaust vent that restricts the fan speed: Airflow at the outside vent is weak and the dryer runs hot. Check for a clogged exhaust vent, since the chart says this can trigger F-45
- A blower fan that spins freely and an exhaust that is clear but the code remains: The fan turns easily and the vent is open. The chart replaces the blower fan in that case
The chart says a clogged vent can restrict fan speed and trigger the F-45 code, so clear the duct before anything else.
If the fan does not spin freely, check for a clog or restriction in the fan housing.
Blower fan and wire harness.
A vent brush and a screwdriver or nut driver.
Can a clogged vent cause it? Yes. The chart says a clogged exhaust vent can restrict fan speed and trigger F-45.
Clear the exhaust vent before you order a fan, because a blocked vent alone triggers F-45
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-46
A blower motor failure, shown as F-46.
Check the wiring between the blower motor and its control board.
Reseat loose wires or replace a damaged harness, then see whether the blower fan spins freely, clearing a clog in the housing. Replace the fan only if it spins freely and the exhaust vent is clear.
- A loose or damaged wire harness between the blower motor and the blower motor control board: F-46 appears on an Oasis dryer and the blower does not run or runs badly. Unplug the dryer and check the harness between the blower motor and its control board
- A blower fan that spins freely with a clear exhaust but the code remains: The fan turns easily and the vent is open. The chart replaces the blower fan if it spins freely and the exhaust vent is clear
If it does not, check for a clog or restriction in the fan housing before you replace anything.
The chart names the blower fan and the wire harness as the parts for F-46.
Blower fan and wire harness.
Clear the exhaust vent first, since a clogged vent can cause blower faults as well
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F-47
A code that the dryer does not use.
Ignore the code.
It can appear when you enter diagnostics but it has no meaning.
- The dryer's diagnostics list a code that is not used: F-47 appears when you enter diagnostics and no fault is present. Note that the chart says to ignore it because it isn't used
- A misread of a nearby real code such as F-45 or F-46: You read F-47 but the display actually shows a different code. Read the display again carefully, or run the diagnostics a second time
- A code appearing after a diagnostics entry only: The code appears only while in diagnostics and never during a normal cycle. Exit diagnostics and run a normal cycle to see whether any code appears
The chart says this error code may appear when entering diagnostics but should be ignored because it isn't used.
If the dryer runs normally with no code, there is nothing to fix and no part to order.
The neighboring blower codes F-45 and F-46 have their own pages and their own parts.
None.
Why does it appear? The chart says it may appear when entering diagnostics.
What if the dryer misbehaves as well? Use the page for the real fault code that appears, such as F-45 or F-46.
Do not order any parts for F-47, because the chart says the code isn't used
If a real fault code appears with it, use that code's page instead
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code F:70 or F:71
A loss of communication between the main control board and the user interface assemblies.
Unplug the dryer and check the harness between the boards.
If the connections are sound, a technician should find the cause; the main board, one of the user interface assemblies, or both may need to be replaced.
- A loose or chafed harness joining the main board to the two console assemblies: An Elite dryer shows F:70 or F:71 while the console dies or stops answering the keys. Pull the plug and inspect the harness that links the main board with the console assemblies

Allow the motor time to cool off and restart the dryer. If the dryer isn't overloaded, unplug the dryer and remove the load. Spin the drum by hand to check for drive system friction. If you detect excessive friction, check all drive components and replace any damaged parts. Parts named: drive system components.
- The dryer is overloaded and the drive motor overheated: Ex52 appears after a heavy load and the motor housing is hot. Remove some of the load if it is too large or heavy
- The motor has not had time to cool: The code appears again straight after a restart on the same load. Allow the motor time to cool off and restart the dryer
- Friction in the drive system that makes the motor work too hard: The drum feels stiff or rough when you spin it by hand. Unplug the dryer, remove the load and spin the drum by hand to feel for friction
The chart says overloading the dryer can cause the motor to overheat, so lighten the load first.
Give it time with the door open. If the dryer restarts and runs, an overload was the cause.
Excessive friction means checking all the drive components and replacing any damaged parts, since a stiff drum is what overheats the motor.
Drive system components.
None for the load check; a screwdriver or nut driver to reach drive parts.
What trips it? Overloading the dryer can cause the motor to overheat, according to the chart.
How do I check for friction? Unplug the dryer, take out the load and spin the drum by hand.
Let the motor cool with the dryer unplugged before you touch it
Do not keep restarting a dryer whose thermal cut-out keeps tripping, because the motor can be damaged
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code EX53
Listed as motor sensing circuit error.
The main electronic control board detects an internal error in its motor circuit. Unplug the dryer and replace the main control board. Parts named: main electronic control board.
- An internal error in the motor circuit of the main electronic control board: Ex53 appears and the dryer will not run the drum. The chart replaces the main control board for an internal error
- A power surge that damaged the control board: The code followed a storm, an outage or a breaker trip. Note whether other electronics on the circuit were affected
- A one-off fault that clears when the dryer is reset: Ex53 appears once and then does not return afterwards. Unplug the dryer for several minutes and see whether the code returns
Use the plug and leave it out for several minutes, which resets the control if the fault was a one-off.
If Ex53 does not return, no repair is needed. If it does, the chart's fix is the board.
The chart says the board detects an internal error in its own motor circuit, so the board is the only part named.
EX53 (compact condensing dryer table, capital X in the chart).
Main electronic control board.
A screwdriver or nut driver and a wrist strap.
Why does the chart write this code with a capital X? The chart prints this row as EX53 while the others use a lowercase x. It is the same family of codes; the x stands for a digit or letter the chart leaves open for the others.
Unplug the dryer before you open the cabinet
The board is a costly part, so price it against the age of the dryer before ordering
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code Ex54
Listed as jammed drive motor.
Overloading can prevent the motor from running. Remove some of the load if too large or heavy. If the dryer isn't overloaded, unplug it and remove the load. Spin the drum by hand to check for drive system friction. If you detect excessive friction, check all drive components and replace any damaged parts. Parts named: drive system components.
- Overloading that prevents the motor from running: Ex54 appears after a heavy load and the drum will not turn. Remove some of the load if it is too large or heavy
- Friction in the drive system that jams the drum: The drum feels stiff or will not turn by hand. Unplug the dryer, remove the load and spin the drum by hand
- A damaged drive component such as a roller, belt or bearing: You can feel roughness or hear grinding when you turn the drum. Check all the drive components and replace any that are damaged
The chart says overloading can prevent the motor from running, so lighten the load first.
Get the drum empty before you test it, so you feel only the drive system's friction.
Excessive friction means checking all the drive components and replacing any damaged parts. The chart names only the drive system components.
Drive system components.
What can jam the motor? Overloading, or friction in the drive system.
Unplug the dryer before reaching into the drum area or the drive system
Do not keep restarting a jammed motor, because it can overheat and trip the thermal cut-out
Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer code Ex62
Listed as shorted compressor.
Unplug the dryer and check the wire harness connections between the main control board and compressor. or replace the wire harness if damaged. If the wire harness connections are okay, you'll probably need to have the compressor replaced. Kenmore Elite and Oasis dryer error codes
Kenmore's Elite and Oasis dryers show codes for airflow, heating, sensors and control faults. Elite and Oasis are two product lines with their own control boards, and the page notes where a code differs between them. The most common codes concern airflow, which is the vent, and heating, which is the element or the gas valve, and both begin with the lint filter and vent.
Clean the lint filter before every load and check the vent hose and the outside hood for lint. A crushed or long vent hose restricts airflow and causes overheating codes. For an electric dryer that does not heat, check that both breakers are on. A sensor or control board code may clear after a power reset, and a code that returns needs a technician.
The model and serial are on a label inside the door opening. Kenmore parts are sold through Sears PartsDirect. Use a metal vent hose rather than plastic foil, and keep the run short.
The Elite and Oasis names mark Kenmore dryer lines of different ages, and the code table you need depends on which line your model belongs to. The model label shows the number; the Elite lines begin with certain prefixes and the Oasis line with others. If the code you see is not listed on this page, search again with the number from the label. Many dryer faults are cured by clearing the vent, and the same airflow check is the first step whatever the line.
The two product lines differ in what they report. The Elite dryers carry a fuller display and report sensor faults with a code on the screen, while the Oasis dryers use a simpler panel and rely on a smaller set of codes and indicator lights. When you read the table below, look for your code's own row and the part that the row names, because the repair that matches a thermistor, a heater relay or a keypad is different even when the symptoms, such as a dryer that does not heat, look alike.
A thermistor is a small temperature-sensing part that reports the exhaust or inlet air temperature to the control. If it reads open or shorted, the control cannot judge the heat and stops the cycle. A heater relay is a switch on the control board that powers the heating element; a stuck or failed relay leaves the dryer tumbling cold. A keypad or user interface fault makes buttons unresponsive or the display wrong. Knowing which part a code names lets you describe the problem accurately and avoid paying for the wrong repair.
Most dryer faults come back to heat and airflow, so run through three checks before you order a part. First, clean the lint screen and the vent. Second, check that the dryer has its full power: an electric dryer needs both legs of a 240 volt supply and a gas dryer needs the gas valve open. Third, run a short test cycle on high heat and feel the exhaust at the vent hood. Warm air out of the hood means the heat works and the sensing is at fault; cold air means the heating circuit is not on.
What does an airflow code mean on a dryer?
The vent is restricted; clean the lint filter, hose and hood.
Why does my dryer not heat?
Check both breakers on an electric dryer, then the vent.
How do I know whether I have an Elite or an Oasis?
The model number on the label shows the line.
