Maytag dishwasher error codes
Maytag dishwasher codes as Maytag Product Help lists them, each with its meaning and the first safe check.
A Maytag dishwasher that stops mid-cycle and shows a letter and number, or flashes a row of lights, is reporting the one part of the wash it could not complete: filling, heating, draining or talking to its own control board. This page lists the codes Maytag documents for its electronic-control dishwashers, with what each means and the first thing to check, so you can tell a ten-minute fix from a service call before you buy a part.

Reading a code on a Maytag dishwasher
Start with the model number. On most Maytag dishwashers it is on a label along the edge of the tub, visible when the door is open, and it is the number that tells a technician which control board you have. Two generations of the code table are in use, and the same F or E code can name a different fault on each, so write down the exact code and the model before you compare them with the list below.
The cheap checks come first and cure a surprising number of codes. Cancel the cycle and run the drain; look at the drain hose for a kink and the filter basket for a grape seed or a piece of glass; check that the water tap under the sink is fully open; and make sure the machine is level, because a tilted tub confuses the float. Cycling the power at the breaker for thirty seconds clears a control hiccup that has no real fault behind it.
A code that returns after those checks usually points at a part: a drain pump or a fill valve, a heater or thermistor, a motor, or the control. Water under the dishwasher, a burning smell or a tripped breaker is the point to stop and call, and anything involving the board or the wiring belongs with a technician rather than a screwdriver.
The codes that bring Maytag owners to this page are overwhelmingly about water leaving the machine. F9 E1 is a long drain: the dishwasher took longer than allowed to empty, which points at a kinked drain hose, a clogged filter or disposer, or on older tables a drain pump left running. F9 E2 and F9 E3 name the drain motor, and on a new installation the first thing to check is whether the knockout plug in the garbage disposer inlet was ever removed, because a plug left in place blocks the drain from day one.
FA E4 and F10 E4 name the diverter valve, and the symptom that goes with them is a rack that is washed in only part of the cycle, with dishes on one level coming out dirty. Clear the drain path, remove the filter and look at the sump, then cycle the power; a code that returns after a clear drain is a pump or diverter part.
A Maytag dishwasher that finishes its cycle with standing water is not the same fault as one that stops with a code. Standing water with no code usually means the filter is full or the hose is kinked; a code means the control timed the drain and it failed. Write down which it was when you call.
Where do I find the model number on a Maytag dishwasher?
Open the door and look along the edge of the tub or the inside of the door frame for the label; it is the number to give a technician.
Can I reset a Maytag dishwasher code?
Cancel the cycle, then switch the power off at the breaker for about thirty seconds and restore it. If the code returns, the fault is real.
