Maytag over-the-range microwave codes as Maytag Product Help lists them, each with its meaning and the first safe check.

A Maytag over-the-range microwave that shows a code, or that goes dark, is reporting a fault in one of its circuits: the door switches, the magnetron, the sensor, the cooling fan or the control. This page lists the codes Maytag documents for its over-the-range microwaves, with each one's meaning and the first check.

Maytag over-the-range microwave codes

Find the model number on a label inside the door frame or behind the filter on the underside. Over-the-range microwaves also act as the range hood, so the fan and the light have their own codes. Many messages, such as a padlock icon or an L, are the control lock and clear with a held key rather than a repair.

Unplug the microwave for a minute, check that the door closes firmly and that nothing, such as a plate edge, stops it latching, and check the breaker. For a code during cooking, run a cup of water for a minute to see whether it heats. A microwave that does not heat but runs normally points at the high-voltage side.

Stop for any sparking, burning smell or arcing, and never open the case: a microwave holds a charged capacitor that stays dangerous when unplugged.

On a Maytag over-the-range microwave, the sensor codes are the ones owners search for. E11, E12, E21, E22 and the E6x codes mean a sensor reported a fault: gas, thermal, oven, cavity thermistor, exhaust air or the AccuPop sensor, and the right move is to reset the power, note whether the code returns and arrange service for the sensor the code names. E03, SE and the F codes in that group name the keypad, touch pad or a control board. The padlock icon, an L or LOC, and a flashing colon are states you can clear yourself.

An over-the-range microwave is also the range's hood, so it has a vent fan and a cooktop light with their own faults. A fan that runs slowly or not at all, or a light that does not come on, are separate from the microwave oven's codes. If the microwave heats but the fan fails, or the reverse, tell the technician which half failed, because they are different parts.

The commonest reason people search for a Maytag microwave code is that the display shows something unfamiliar after a power cut, a long cook or a cleaning. Many such displays are plain status: a flashing colon means power was interrupted and the clock needs setting, PF means a power failure, and a padlock means the control is locked. Only a code that begins with an E and a number, and that returns after you unplug the microwave for a minute, is a fault.

What does a padlock icon mean on a Maytag microwave?

The control lock is on; hold the lock key for about three seconds to clear it.

Is it safe to open a microwave to check it?

No. The capacitor stays charged after unplugging; a technician should do any internal work.

Is the vent fan on a Maytag microwave a separate fault?

Yes; the fan and light have their own circuits, separate from the microwave oven.

Can I check a Maytag microwave for heat?

Run a cup of water for a minute; if it does not warm, the high-voltage side needs service, and the case must not be opened.

What does PF mean on a Maytag microwave?

Power was interrupted; set the clock and carry on.

When is an E code a real fault?

When it returns after you unplug the microwave for a minute.
