The washer is not getting enough water, or the fill is taking too long
Confirm both supply taps are fully open and the hoses are not kinked.
Clear the inlet screens, check for siphoning at the drain hose, and replace the water valve assembly only if it is defective.
Maytag front-load washer code F3 E1, F32, F35, F8 E3, F27, F/09, F02
The water-level sensor failed, or the tub is filling beyond what the washer should hold
Unplug the washer and see whether the tub keeps filling.
Replace a leaking water valve, or check the level switch wiring and replace the switch.

The water temperature sensor reading is missing or wrong
Unplug the washer and look at the wiring going to the temperature sensor.
Reconnect or replace a damaged harness, then replace the sensor if the wiring is sound.

The heating element, or on a steam model the steamer, has failed
Unplug the washer and check the wiring to the heating element.
Test the element with a meter; replace it only if it reads open.
Maytag front-load washer code F7 E2, F1 E2, F11, F31, F42, F/10, F/15
The motor control board reported an error or overheated, or the motor was overloaded
Take clothes out if the drum was overloaded and let the washer cool.
Check the harness at the motor control board and remove drum friction before replacing the board.
Maytag front-load washer code F0 E1, rL, F34
A load was detected in the drum during the Clean Washer cycle
Open the door and take out everything in the drum.
Restart the Clean Washer cycle with the drum empty.
Maytag front-load washer code F0 E4
The incoming water is too hot for the selected cycle
Verify the hot and cold hose connections.
Correct the supply temperature or reversed hoses. The one documented check: cycle power to the control to reset the washer.
Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

The washer detected an off-balance load
Redistribute similar items and confirm the washer is level.
Retry with a balanced load. Maytag documents these checks for this code: is the washer overloaded; and were you washing a bulky item by itself.

A status message rather than a fault: Control Lock is on, or the cycle was paused or cancelled
Confirm the washer otherwise runs normally.
Turn Control Lock off, or let the paused cycle finish draining.

Maytag front-load washer codes
A Maytag front-load washer shows its trouble as a letter and a number, such as an F followed by an E, and the code names the stage the washer could not finish: filling, draining, locking the door, spinning, heating or reading its own sensors. This page lists the codes Maytag documents for its front-load washers, each with its meaning and the first thing to check.
Front-load and top-load Maytag washers do not share a code table, so first be sure you are reading the right directory. Then find the model number on a label inside the door opening or on the rear panel. Two code styles are in use on front-loaders, the older two-part codes and the newer numbered codes, and the same number can mean a different fault on a compact washer and on a large one.
The cheap checks cure many codes. For fill faults, open both taps and clean the inlet screens; for drain faults, clean the drain pump filter behind the small door at the bottom left of the front and check the hose for a kink; for door faults, close the door firmly and look for a sock or a strap caught in the seal; for balance and spin faults, remove the transport bolts on a new washer and level the machine. Then unplug the washer for five minutes.
A code that returns usually names the water level sensor, the drain pump, the door lock, the motor or the control. Stop for water on the floor, a burning smell or any need to work on the wiring.
The fault families on a Maytag front-load washer map onto its subsystems. F8 E1 and Lo FL are fill problems: both taps open, inlet screens clean. F9 E1 is a long drain, and the drain pump filter is behind the small door at the bottom left. F5 E1, F5 E2 and F5 E3 are the door: not detected, would not lock, would not unlock. F7 E1 and F7 E2 are the motor and its control, and the first check on a new washer is that the four shipping bolts and spacers were removed.
F0 E2 and the Sd or SUDS messages are the suds routine, which means too much detergent or a detergent that is not HE. F0 E1 and rL mean a load was in the drum during the Clean Washer cycle.
