Every code

Every Maytag top-load washer code: what it means and what to do

Maytag top-load washer code F8 E1, LF

The washer is not seeing water enter the tub, or the fill is taking too long

Confirm both supply taps are fully open and the hoses are not kinked.

Clear the inlet screens and hoses, then replace the water valve assembly only if the valve does not open when the washer calls for water.

Maytag top-load washer code F3 E1

The water-level signal is out of range: the control cannot read the tub's water level

Follow the air tube from the bottom of the tub to the console and look for a kink, a blockage or a loose end.

Replace a damaged tube; if the tube is sound the level sensor on the main control board is the remaining part. Maytag documents these checks for this code: did you receive a F3 E1 water level alert; and cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F3 E2, HC

The inlet water temperature reading is wrong, most often because the hot and cold hoses are on the wrong inlets

Trace each hose from the tap to the washer and check red to hot, blue to cold.

Swap reversed hoses; if they are right, test the inlet thermistor in the water valve wiring harness.

Maytag top-load washer code F8 E6, F8 E5, F8 E3

Water is where it should not be: found in the tub with the lid open, no hot water detected because the hoses are reversed, or more water in the tub than the washer should hold

Close the lid and check whether the tub is filling while the washer is off.

Swap reversed hoses; if water fills the tub with the washer unplugged, replace the water inlet valve.

Maytag top-load washer code F9 E1, F9 E2, F0 E8, drn, dr, Ld

The water level did not fall when the drain pump ran, or too much water was left in the tub after a drain

Look at the drain hose for a kink and check how far it enters the standpipe.

Clear the hose, standpipe or pump; if the drain is clear and the level still does not drop, the pump or the level sensor is next.

Maytag top-load washer code Sd, 5d, Sud, F0 E2

The washer detected too many suds and ran its suds-reduction routine

Let the washer finish its suds routine before you open the lid.

Use only HE detergent in the measured amount, and run an empty rinse if suds keep returning.

Maytag top-load washer code F0 E3, oL

The load is larger than the washer's capacity

Open the lid and look at how full the basket is.

Take some garments out and restart the cycle.

Maytag top-load washer code F0 E4

The water temperature was too high near the end of the cycle, which limits spin speed

Check that the hot and cold hoses are on the correct inlets.

Swap reversed hoses; if they are right, the hot side of the water valve may be sticking open. The one documented check: cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F0 E5, F0 E9, OFb, uL

The washer could not balance the load for the spin

Open the lid and look at how the wet load sits around the wash plate.

Redistribute the load, level the cabinet, and check the suspension if it keeps happening.

Maytag top-load washer code F0 E7, rL, F34

Clothes were detected in the tub while the Clean Washer cycle was running

Open the lid and confirm the basket is completely empty.

Remove everything and start the Clean Washer cycle again with an empty tub.

Maytag top-load washer code F1 E1

The main electronic control board reported an internal fault

Unplug the washer for 5 minutes and restore power.

Replace the main electronic control board only if the code comes straight back. The one documented check: cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F1 E2

The motor-control circuit on the main control board reported a fault

Turn the basket impeller by hand with the washer unplugged.

Free any drive restriction; if the basket turns freely, check the motor wiring and then the control board. The one documented check: cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F2 E1, F2 E2

A key on the control panel has been read as pressed for too long

Press each key firmly and release it, and dry the panel if liquid has run onto it.

Replace the user interface control only if a key stays stuck.

Maytag top-load washer code F2 E3, F1 E3

The main control board and the user interface control do not match

Compare the part number of each board against the washer's model number.

Order the correct board for the model; a mismatch appears after one board is swapped.

Maytag top-load washer code F2 E4, F2 E5

The user interface control failed or lost its connection to the main control board

Unplug the washer and check the harness between the console and the main board.

Reseat or replace the harness, then replace the user interface control if the code returns.

Maytag top-load washer code F6 E2, F6 E3

The user interface control and the main control board lost communication

Check the harness between the console and the main board for a loose end.

Replace a damaged harness, then the user interface control, and the main board last.

Maytag top-load washer code F5 E1

The lid switch reads an open lid while the lock says the lid is locked

Close the lid firmly and try the cycle again.

Check the lid lock/switch wiring; replace the lid lock/switch assembly if the wiring is sound. The one documented check: cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F5 E2, dLO, LdL

The washer could not lock the lid

Look under the lid and around the lock strike for a stray item or detergent build-up.

Clear the obstruction; if the lock still will not engage, replace the lid lock/switch assembly.

Maytag top-load washer code F5 E3, dU, LdU

The washer could not unlock the lid

Take any laundry basket or other object off the lid.

If the lid is still held, check the lock wiring; a lid that has to be forced usually needs a new lock/switch and strike.

Maytag top-load washer code F5 E4, Lid

The lid was left open, or was never seen to open between loads

Open the lid and close it firmly to clear the display.

If the lid really is opened between loads and the code stays, replace the lid lock/switch assembly.

Maytag top-load washer code F7 E0, F7 E1, PF

Power was lost, at rest or during the spin

Confirm household power was actually interrupted and the cord is seated in the outlet.

Restart the cycle; if it repeats without an outage, check the cord and its connection to the control board.

Maytag top-load washer code F7 E2, F7 E6, F7 E8

The drive motor failed to run when the control called for it, its circuit is faulty, or it overheated

Unplug the washer and turn the basket impeller by hand.

Free any restriction, check the motor harness, then replace the motor and finally the main control board.

Maytag top-load washer code F7 E3, F7 E4, F7 E5

The clutch or shifter engaged at the wrong time or failed to engage the basket for the spin

Unplug the washer and check the clutch or shifter and its wiring.

Free any obstruction, reseat the wiring, and replace the clutch or shifter assembly if it is damaged.

Maytag top-load washer code F7 E7

The motor could not reach its target speed

Look for anything wedged between the spin basket and the tub.

Remove the obstruction, balance and level the washer, and replace the suspension springs or the motor if they are at fault. Maytag documents these checks for this code: did you receive an F7E7; and cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F7 E9

The motor rotor did not move when the control powered it, or the control reported a communication fault, depending on the platform

Turn the basket by hand with the washer unplugged.

Free anything jamming the basket; if nothing is jamming it, replace the drive motor. Maytag documents these checks for this code: did you receive an F7E9; and cycle power to the control to reset the washer.

Maytag specifies a 5 minutes power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Maytag top-load washer code F3 E5, F8 E2, dET

The detergent dispenser (mini, bulk or cartridge) did not deliver detergent

Check that the dispenser is seated and holds detergent.

Add detergent by hand for the load and see whether the dispenser behaves on the next cycle.

Maytag top-load washer code Fd, LOC, LC, Int

A status message rather than a fault: factory default, Control Lock, or a paused or cancelled cycle

Confirm the washer otherwise runs normally.

Clear the setting the message reports; none of these needs a repair.

Maytag top-load washer code F0 E0, F3 E3, F6 E1

Maytag publishes a page for each of these codes but states no cause

Write down the code and the point in the cycle where it appeared.

Disconnect power for 5 minutes and restart; arrange service if it returns.

Maytag top-load washer code Add Garment Light On

Maytag's own page says the Add Garment light is a normal status: it tells you the washer will let you pause and add items.

Confirm the cycle is still in the stage where items can be added.

Pause the cycle, open the lid, add the items and touch and hold Start/Pause to start the cycle again. The one documented check: "Add Garment" Light On.

  • The washer is in the part of the cycle where items can be added: The Add Garment light is lit and the cycle is running normally. Note that the light is a status, not a fault; Maytag says you may pause the cycle, open the lid and add items
  • A light left lit because the lid was opened and the cycle paused: You paused the cycle earlier and the washer is waiting. Look at whether the cycle is paused or running
  • A misunderstanding of the light as a fault: The washer runs and finishes the load with no other sign of trouble. Watch a full cycle; if it finishes normally, no repair is needed

Maytag says that when Add Garment is lit you may pause the cycle, open the lid and add items. It reports that the washer is ready for that, not that anything has failed.

Touch Start/Pause to pause the cycle, open the lid once the basket has stopped, add the items and close the lid.

Maytag says to touch and hold the Start/Pause button until the cycle starts running again.

Add Garment light on.

None.

None.

What does the Add Garment light mean? Maytag says that when Add Garment is lit you may pause the cycle, open the lid and add items.

How do I restart after adding items? Touch and hold the Start/Pause button, as Maytag says.

Can I add items at any time? Only while the light is lit; opening the lid outside that window pauses the cycle.

Do Amana washers work the same way? Amana top-load washers with the same panel behave the same way.

Wait for the basket to stop before you open the lid or reach in, and unplug the washer if it will not stop

Call for service only if the light stays lit with no cycle running and the washer will not respond to any button

Maytag top-load washer code Cycle Complete Light On, Done Light On

Maytag's own page says the cycle has finished; the Cycle Complete or Done light stays on until the lid is opened or Cancel or Power is pressed.

Open the lid to clear the light.

Take the load out promptly, as Maytag advises, so it does not sit wet.

  • The cycle has finished: The Cycle Complete or Done light is on and the basket has stopped. Maytag says the light comes on when the cycle is complete and stays on until the lid is opened or Cancel or Power is pressed
  • A load left in the washer after the cycle: The light has been on for a while and the load is damp. Take the load out, as Maytag advises, so it does not sit wet
  • A light that will not clear: The light stays on after you open the lid. Press Cancel or Power, which Maytag lists as clearing it

Maytag says that when the cycle is finished the Cycle Complete or Done light comes on, and it is not a fault.

Maytag says the light stays on until the lid is opened, or Cancel or Power is pressed.

For best results Maytag asks that the load be removed promptly once the cycle has finished and the lid is opened.

The light stays on until the lid is opened or Cancel or Power is pressed, so a lit light on a washer you have already emptied means only that nobody has cleared it.

Cycle Complete light on, or Done light on.

None.

What does the Cycle Complete light mean? Maytag says that once the cycle is complete this light comes on and remains on until the lid is opened or Cancel is pressed.

What does the Done light mean? The same: Maytag says the Done light illuminates when the cycle has finished.

Do Amana washers show it? Amana top-load washers with the same panel do.

Is a lit light a sign the washer failed to unlock? No. Maytag says the light stays on until the lid is opened or Cancel or Power is pressed; it does not mean the lid is stuck.

Why should I remove the load promptly? Maytag asks for it for best results; a wet load left in the drum can pick up a musty smell.

Unplug the washer before you look for a fault behind the panel

Call for service only if the light stays on after you open the lid and press Cancel and Power

Maytag top-load washer code Fill or Sensing Light On

Maytag's own page says the washer is filling and sensing the load size before it sets the wash water level.

Confirm both water taps are fully open if little or no water is coming in.

Leave the lid closed during sensing; opening it pauses sensing, and the cycle is cancelled if the lid stays open over 10 minutes.

  • The washer is sensing the load size: The Fill or Sensing light is on soon after you press Start with the water level knob on Auto Sensing. Maytag says the washer fills and senses to determine load size and balance, then fills to the level for that load
  • Little or no water is entering: The light is on and the tub barely fills. Check that both water lines are fully open, as Maytag says
  • The lid was opened during sensing: The light stays on and the cycle has stopped. Close the lid; Maytag says opening the unlocked lid pauses the sensing and wash phases

Maytag says that with the water level knob on Auto Sensing the washer fills and senses the load size before setting the wash water level, and the Sensing light may also come on during the wash portion, which is normal.

Maytag says that if the fill light is on and little or no water is coming in, check the supply lines; both water lines must be completely open.

Maytag says opening the unlocked lid pauses the sensing and wash phases and closing it resumes the cycle; if the lid stays open over 10 minutes the washer cancels the cycle and pumps out the water.

Fill or Sensing light on.

None by Maytag; see the Wash light page for the water valve parts.

What does the Fill or Sensing light mean? The washer is filling and sensing to determine load size and balance.

Is it normal for it to come on during the wash? Maytag says the sensing light may come on during the wash portion of the cycle and that is normal.

What if no water comes in? Check both water lines are completely open.

What happens if I open the lid? The sensing and wash phases pause; after 10 minutes open the cycle is cancelled and the water pumped out.

Is it the same as the Wash light? No; the Wash light on or flashing means the level has not changed for a while.

Turn off the taps and unplug the washer if you see water leaking from a hose

Call for service if the tub does not fill with both taps open and the hoses clear

Maytag top-load washer code Lid Light Flashing

Maytag's own page says the washer will not advance because the lid is open or the lid lock is not engaging.

Close the lid and check the lock striker for packaging or clothing caught in it.

Wipe any detergent or lint build-up from the lock and the striker with a soft damp cloth. Maytag documents these checks for this code: is the lid closed; was the cycle just started; and is the Lid Locking.

  • The lid is open or not fully closed: The Lid light flashes each time you press Start. Close the lid; Maytag says some washers will not fill or wash with the lid open, and will drain after 10 minutes if it stays open
  • Something caught in the lock striker: The lid closes but the lock does not engage. Check for packaging material or an item of clothing at the lock striker
  • Detergent or lint build-up at the lock: The lock feels sticky and the striker does not seat cleanly. Wipe the lock and striker with a soft damp cloth
  • A recorded error code (Lid Lock LED flashing on the Bravos table): The lid is clear and the lock works, yet the light keeps flashing. The Sears table says the Lid Lock LED flashing means the control recorded one of the error codes; enter the diagnostic test mode to read it

Maytag says the lid must be closed for the machine to fill, wash, drain, rinse and spin, and that the washer will drain after 10 minutes if the lid stays open.

Maytag says that when Start/Pause is touched the washer runs a self-test on the lid lock: you hear a click, the basket makes a slight turn and the lid unlocks briefly before locking again.

Maytag asks you to check for interference at the lock striker, such as packaging material or clothing, and to wipe away detergent or lint build-up with a soft damp cloth.

The Bravos table says a flashing Lid Lock LED indicates the control recorded an error code, and to use the tech sheet stored in the console to enter the diagnostic test mode and recover it.

Lid light flashing (Lid Lock LED on the Bravos table).

None for the LED itself; it points to the recorded code.

A soft damp cloth; the tech sheet in the console for the diagnostic mode.

What does the Lid light flashing mean? Maytag says the lid must be closed for the washer to fill and wash, and asks whether the lid is closed and locking.

What is the lock self-test? When Start/Pause is touched you hear a click, the basket makes a slight turn and the lid unlocks briefly before locking again.

What is the lock striker? The piece on the lid that fits inside the lid lock.

Does the Lid Lock LED mean a fault? On the Bravos table it means the control recorded one of the error codes; read it in the diagnostic test mode.

Unplug the washer before you open the top to reach the lock

Do not defeat the lid lock; it stops the basket when the lid opens

Maytag top-load washer code Wash Light On or Flashing

Maytag's own page says the water level has not changed for a while, or water is present but the control does not see the level change.

Confirm both faucets are completely open and clean the inlet valve screens.

Check that the drain hose is not too far down inside the standpipe or laundry tub. Maytag documents these checks for this code: is the water supply connected correctly; and is the drain hose installed correctly.

  • A supply tap partly closed or a clogged inlet screen: The Wash light is on or flashing and the tub fills slowly. Check both faucets are completely open and clean the valve screens
  • A drain hose too far into the standpipe that siphons the water out: The level does not change and the hose sits deep. Check the drain hose depth and the installation
  • A water valve or level sensor fault (Wash LED on, no fill or long fill, on the Bravos table): The supply is fine, the hose is right and the light stays on. The Sears table says to check the taps, hoses and valve; replace the water inlet valve assembly if defective, and the main control board if water enters but is not detected

Maytag says the Wash light is on or flashing when the water level has not changed for a while, or water is present but the control does not detect the level changing. Verify both faucets are completely open.

Turn off the water, remove the inlet hoses and remove any accumulated film or particles from the water inlet valve screens, then reinstall the hoses and check for leaks.

Maytag says the drain hose may be too far down inside the drainpipe or laundry tub; correct its depth.

The table says the Wash LED on means no fill or a long fill: check the fill hoses and inlet valves, replace the water inlet valve assembly if defective, and, if water enters but is not detected, replace the main electronic control board.

Wash light on or flashing.

Water inlet valve assembly; main electronic control board.

A bucket, pliers, an old toothbrush and a towel.

What does the Wash light on or flashing mean? Maytag says the water level has not changed for a while, or water is present but the control does not detect the level changing.

What is the Wash LED on the Bravos table? No fill or a long fill, the same fault as F8 E1.

How do I clean the inlet screens? Turn off the water, remove the hoses and clear film and particles from the screens on the valve.

Turn off both taps and unplug the washer before you remove a hose

Call for service if the tub does not fill with both taps open and screens clean

Maytag top-load washer lights and codes

Many Maytag top-load washers report faults with a pattern of lights instead of a number. A steady or flashing Add Garment, Fill or Sensing, Wash, Spin, Lid or Cycle Complete light is the washer telling you which stage it stopped at, and the six pages in this section explain each one: a Lid light flashing means the lid switch does not see the lid closed, a Spin light flashing means the washer could not reach spin speed, usually from an unbalanced load, and a Fill or Sensing light on means the washer is waiting for water or measuring the load.

Start with the easy causes. Close the lid fully, redistribute a heavy or bunched load, check that both taps are on and the hoses are not kinked, and clear the drain hose. Switch the washer off at the power outlet for a minute and restart the cycle. Maytag washers built on the same platform as some other Whirlpool brands use many of the same codes, but follow the page for your washer's lights and model. A light pattern that returns after those checks points to a lid switch, a water valve or a control fault that a technician should look at.

If a light pattern points to water or draining, run a quick check of the supply and drain: turn both taps fully on and look at the fill hoses for kinks, then check the drain hose is not pushed too far down the standpipe or blocked. A lid light usually responds to a good close and a clean lid switch area. Keep a note of the pattern and the cycle stage when it appeared, because a service technician will ask for them. Washers over ten years old may have wear in the lid switch or the water valve, and replacement parts are matched by model number.

What does a flashing Lid light on a Maytag washer mean?

The washer does not detect the lid as closed. Close it firmly, check nothing blocks it and test again; a lid switch fault needs a technician.

Why does my Maytag washer stop on the Spin light?

It usually could not balance the load. Spread the clothes evenly or add a few towels and restart the spin.
