Maytag error codes: which directory to open

Maytag appliances report faults in different ways depending on what they are, so the first step is to open the directory for your appliance and not to search for a code in the abstract. A top-load washer often reports with a pattern of lights; a front-load washer with an F and an E and a number; a dryer with a code or with a status such as Loc or PF; a dishwasher with an F code or flashing lights; a range, wall oven or over-the-range microwave with an F code, a four-character code such as 3D11, or a plain message. Each directory on this page lists the codes Maytag documents for that appliance, with what each means and the first thing to check.

Before you open a directory, find the model number: for a washer or dryer it is on a label inside the door opening or on the door frame, for a dishwasher along the edge of the tub, for a range or wall oven on the frame behind the door. The same code can mean a different fault on a different generation, and a technician will ask for the number. If you do not know whether your washer is a top-load or a front-load, look at where the door is: on the top means top-load, on the front means front-load, and the two do not share a code table.

Across all Maytag appliances the order of work is the same. Write the code down exactly, cycle the power for a minute at the plug or breaker, check the cheap causes the directory names, and stop for anything involving water near electrics, a burning smell, gas, or line-voltage wiring.

If you own several Maytag appliances, you may see familiar code formats on each, because they share a platform. A code on a washer may read like a code on a dryer, but the meaning differs by appliance. Always check the page for the appliance and model, not just the letters. Keep a note of each appliance's model and serial in one place, such as a phone note, since they are often hard to read once the machines are installed.

Do Maytag dryers and washers share error codes?

No. Each appliance type has its own code table, and a top-load washer and a front-load washer differ from each other too.

What should I do before I look up a Maytag code?

Write the exact display, find the model number, and cycle the power at the breaker for about a minute.

Can I use a dryer code on a washer?

No, the meaning depends on the appliance.
