Every Westinghouse iGen4500 generator code: what it means and what to do

Westinghouse iGen4500 generator code low-oil-led-on-engine-stopped

Low engine oil. Westinghouse says that when the oil level in the crankcase falls below the safe operating limit, the Low Oil LED lights and the generator automatically shuts off the engine.

Turn the battery switch to the OFF position, then check the engine oil level on a level surface.

Westinghouse's troubleshooting table for a generator stopped by low oil: with the Low Oil LED lit, turn the battery switch to OFF and add engine oil. If the oil level is right and the engine still starts and then shuts down, the table lists a defective low oil level switch and says to contact Westinghouse customer service.

Westinghouse iGen4500 generator code no-lights-or-no-response-to-start-button

The generator will not start. Westinghouse's first listed cause is that the battery switch is in the OFF position, and its manual says the battery switch must be ON before electric start or remote start.

Turn the battery switch to the ON position and check that the Battery indicator lights.

Westinghouse says the Battery indicator lights to show that power is on and stays lit while the unit is on. Its no-start table then lists, in order: out of fuel (refuel), bad or old gasoline (drain the tank and refuel with fresh gasoline), a dirty air filter (clean it), a flooded engine (wait five minutes, turn the battery switch OFF, pull the recoil handle several times, and if it still will not start remove and dry the spark plug), a faulty or fouled spark plug (gap or replace it), and a drained battery (use the recoil handle to start it and charge the battery).

Westinghouse iGen4500 generator code overload-led-on-output-ready-off

The generator is overloaded, or there is a short circuit in a connected appliance. Westinghouse says the generator switches off all AC output to protect itself while the engine keeps running, the OVERLOAD light shows red and the green OUTPUT READY light goes off.

Turn off and unplug everything connected to the generator.

Westinghouse's steps to restore AC output: with all loads off and unplugged, push the RESET button on the control panel until the OVERLOAD LED goes off and OUTPUT READY lights; reset any circuit breakers that are off; verify the running and surge loads do not exceed the generator's capacity; and reconnect loads one at a time, letting the generator stabilize after each. Westinghouse warns that marginal overloading that briefly lights the OVERLOAD LED may shorten the generator's service life. Its no-power table also lists checking the AC load and the air inlet, and stopping and restarting the engine.
