Whirlpool shows its codes in several styles. Washers use F and E combinations such as F5 E1 for a door or lid problem and F8 E1 for water that is not filling, microwaves show short messages for the sensor, the door and the keypad, and beverage centers show CL or LO when the cabinet temperature is not where it should be. Many Whirlpool codes are also used, with the same meaning, by Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana, which are made by Whirlpool.

Always read the whole code and note the model number, since the first part usually names the area and the second narrows it. The safe checks are the usual ones: reseat the door or lid, check the water taps and drain hoses, restore power at the breaker for a minute and let a beverage center settle for several hours after a setting change. A code that returns after that needs a technician. Each family has its own page with what Whirlpool publishes and what it does not say.

Each Whirlpool appliance directory lists the codes Whirlpool documents for that appliance, and each is written for Whirlpool's own models: the dishwashers, dryers, front-load and top-load washers, ranges, wall ovens and over-the-range microwaves. Pick the directory for your appliance, match the code to your model number, and use the first check before you buy a part. Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana appliances have their own libraries, because the model lines, the manuals and the support pages differ even where the underlying control is similar.

What does F8 E1 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

The washer is not filling with enough water. Check that both taps are fully open, and look for a kinked hose and a clogged inlet screen.

Do Maytag and KitchenAid use the same codes as Whirlpool?

Often yes, because Whirlpool builds them, but check your own model's page since not every code matches.
