Every Whirlpool front-load washer code: what it means and what to do

Whirlpool front-load washer code F0 E2, Sd, SUDS, Sud, Fod

The washer detected too many suds and ran a suds-reduction routine

Let the washer finish its suds routine.

Use only HE detergent in the measured amount and run a rinse if suds return.

  • Regular detergent, or too much HE detergent: Foam fills the drum and the spin runs slowly. Check the label for the HE mark and measure the dose against the load
  • A bulk dispenser doing the dosing while you add more by hand: Suds appear when you add detergent on top of a bulk dispenser that is enabled. Whirlpool says that if the bulk dispenser is enabled there is no need to add detergent to the load
  • A wrong concentration setting: The dispenser concentration does not match the detergent in use. Whirlpool says you must enter the detergent's concentration level into the machine

Whirlpool says the washer runs an automatic suds reduction routine and asks you to let it continue. The Duet Alpha table says it fills the tub with water and tumbles the clothes.

Whirlpool says that if you see Sud or Sd with the Rinse status light on, the washer is removing suds and you should let the cycle continue; with the Cycle Complete light on, the washer detected too many suds, and the load may not be rinsed, so select Rinse/Spin.

Use only HE detergent; non-HE detergent or more than the recommended amount can cause excess suds, a slow spin and longer cycles.

The compact table says to remove the wet clothes, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the tub, restart on a normal cycle without more detergent, then run the clean washer cycle with bleach to rinse out suds residue.

F0 E2, Sd, SUDS, Sud or Fod, by platform.

None; HE detergent.

A measuring cap and towels; a tablespoon for the compact's oil step.

What do F0 E2, Sd, SUDS, Sud and Fod mean? Excess suds were detected. F0 E2, Sd and Sud are on the Whirlpool pages, SUDS on the Duet Alpha and Maytag Maxima, and Fod on the compact.

What does the Rinse light mean? Whirlpool says the washer is removing suds and you should let the cycle continue.

Why is my load so wet? Whirlpool says excess suds reduce the spin speed, which leaves the load very wet.

Unplug the washer if suds have leaked into the console or onto the floor

Do not add detergent or a de-foamer to a washer that is already sudsing

Whirlpool front-load washer code F3 E2, F24, F/05, F05

The water temperature sensor reading is missing or wrong

Unplug the washer and look at the wiring going to the temperature sensor.

Reconnect or replace a damaged harness, then replace the sensor if the wiring is sound.

  • A loose or damaged harness to the water temperature sensor: The code appears on a fill and the wires at the sensor are loose or chafed. With the washer unplugged, look at the wiring going to the water temperature sensor; the compact table says to check the harness between the sensor and the main electronic control board
  • A failed water temperature sensor: The harness is sound and the same code stays on the display. The tables say to replace the temperature sensor if the wiring is okay
  • A one-off sensor reading that a reset clears: F3 E2 appears once and does not return after a power reset. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes and run a cycle; Whirlpool's page for F3 E2 gives this reset as its only step

Whirlpool's F3 E2 page for the front-load washer gives only the 5-minute power reset: disconnect the washer for 5 minutes, restore power and run a cycle.

The Duet Alpha and Duet HE tables say to unplug the washer and check the wiring going to the water temperature sensor. The compact table says to reconnect any loose wire or replace the harness if it is damaged.

If the wiring is okay, the tables say to replace the temperature sensor. The Duet Steam table says the F24 fault is between the sensor and the display control board.

F3 E2, F24, F/05 or F05, by platform.

Temperature sensor; wire harness.

A screwdriver or nut driver; a flashlight.

Is F24 always a sensor code? On the Duet HE, Duet Steam and Sport tables, yes. On the compact table, F24 is an overflow code.

Does Whirlpool give a cause? Whirlpool's page for F3 E2 gives only the 5-minute reset; the tables give the sensor checks.

Unplug the washer before you look at the sensor wiring

Stop if a connector is melted or burnt and have the control board checked

Whirlpool front-load washer code F6 E1, F6 E2, F6 E3, F28, F/11, F70, F71, F21

Two of the washer's control boards lost communication

Unplug the washer and check the harness between the boards for a loose end.

Replace a damaged harness, then the board the tables name, and the main board last.

  • A loose or damaged harness between two boards: The code appears after the washer was moved or the top panel lifted. With the washer unplugged, check the harness between the main board and the motor control board, and between the main board and the user interface
  • A bad door lock/switch starving the motor control board (F28): F28 appears and the door lock wiring is suspect. The Duet Steam table says a bad door lock/switch prevents the motor control board getting power, resulting in F28
  • A defective cabinet grounding switch (F28): F28 appears and the front or back grounding switch wiring is loose. The Duet Steam table says the cabinet has grounding switches at the front and back and defective ones can trigger F28
  • A failed motor control board or user interface: Wiring is sound and the same code stays on the display. The tables say to replace the motor control board (or the user interface control) and, if the problem persists, the main electronic control board

The tables say to unplug the washer and check the wire harness connections between the two boards named by the code: main and motor control board for F6 E1, F28, F/11 and F21, or the user interface control and the main board for F6 E2 and F6 E3. Reconnect any loose wire and replace a damaged harness.

The Duet Steam table says that if the wiring is okay and the drum rotates before the code appears, replace the user interface control; replace the main electronic control board if the drum does not rotate before the code appears.

The Duet Steam table says to check the wiring at the door lock/switch assembly, and at the front and back cabinet grounding switches, and to replace a damaged lock/switch or grounding switch.

Replace the motor control board (or user interface control) first and the main electronic control board last if the code persists.

F6 E1, F6 E2, F6 E3, F28, F/11, F70, F71 or F21, by platform.

Wire harness; motor control board; user interface control; main electronic control board; door lock/switch; grounding switches.

Why does a door lock matter to F28? The Duet Steam table says a bad door lock/switch prevents the motor control board getting power.

Unplug the washer before you open the console or any panel with control boards

Do not replace the main board before the harness and the smaller boards have been checked

Whirlpool front-load washer code LOC, LC, Int

A status message rather than a fault: Control Lock is on, or the cycle was paused or cancelled

Confirm the washer otherwise runs normally.

Turn Control Lock off, or let the paused cycle finish draining.

  • Control Lock was switched on: LOC or LC shows when you press a button. Whirlpool says the code is a reminder that you set the control lock and need to deactivate it
  • Int: the cycle was paused or cancelled: Int shows on the display after you pressed pause or cancel. Whirlpool says the washer can take 20 to 30 minutes to stop spinning and drain while Int shows on the display
  • A hand, a child or a laundry basket pressing the panel: LOC or LC appears without anyone choosing to lock the controls. Look at whether the Control Lock button was pressed by accident, then hold it for 3 seconds to unlock

Whirlpool says there is no error: Control Lock is activated, and if you try to push buttons you may see LoC or LC. It is a reminder to deactivate the lock.

Whirlpool says that touching and holding the Control Lock button for 3 seconds locks the controls; the display counts down 3, 2, 1 and then shows LC or LoC. Hold it again the same way to unlock. You may still touch Start to pause the cycle or Power to turn the washer off.

Whirlpool says Int means the cycle was paused or cancelled, and lists pressing Pause or Cancel twice and Power once as the way to remove it; the method varies by model. If it stays, use the 5-minute power reset.

LOC, LC or Int.

None.

What do LOC and LC mean? Control Lock is on. Whirlpool says there is no error.

How do I turn Control Lock off? Hold the Control Lock button for 3 seconds, as Whirlpool describes.

What does Int mean? The cycle was paused or cancelled; it can show for 20 to 30 minutes while the washer stops and drains.

How do I clear Int? Press Pause or Cancel twice and Power once; the method varies by model.

Unplug the washer before you open the door on a drum that may still be draining

Call for service if the panel stays dead after Control Lock is off
