Model — Xbox One (2013 launch)
The original 2013 Xbox One — 1080p gaming, disc drive, hard drive. The oldest Xbox here; still online for some games but well behind current hardware, and slower with a mechanical hard drive.
Storage — external USB works
Add a USB 3.0 external drive to store and play games; the internal drive is a slow mechanical HDD, so an external SSD can even speed up load times a little.
Age & performance
As the oldest model, it is slower and louder, and app/online support for older titles is shrinking. It does not do 4K anything (video or games).

Launch hardware
The 2013 Xbox One shipped with a 500 GB hard drive, a Blu-ray drive, 8 GB of RAM, dual-band Wi-Fi, three USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet, HDMI in and out and a Kinect port, plus a large external power brick.
Known faults
Early consoles had disc drives that ground when a disc was inserted, which does not damage the disc, and external power bricks that ran hot and failed, with the main filter capacitor a named cause.
What the S fixed
The Xbox One S moved the power supply inside, dropped the Kinect port, swapped the capacitive power button for a physical one and added 4K Blu-ray.

My original Xbox One is very slow.+

The 2013 launch Xbox One uses a slow mechanical hard drive and older hardware, so long load and install times are largely inherent to its age. Adding an external USB 3.0 SSD to install games onto can noticeably improve load times, and keeping the system software updated and freeing storage helps. But it will not match a newer Xbox; the original One is the slowest model in the family.

Why will my original Xbox One not power on?+

The external power brick is a common failure point on the original Xbox One. Check that its light is on and try another brick before you suspect the console.
