• What owners run into
  Reports include heat in a tight cabinet, a console that will not power on and a HDMI connection that gives a black screen.
• How to approach a fault
  Give it airflow, reseat the power cord and try another HDMI cable and port.
• Finding your console
  The serial number is on the back and in Settings, System, Console info. Xbox support needs it for warranty checks.
• Airflow and noise
  The Series S draws air in at the bottom and out at the top, so give it clear space above and at the sides. A console in a closed cabinet runs hot, and a fan that is loud or a shutdown during play is a heat signal.
• Display and sound
  The Series S outputs through one HDMI port. If the picture is black, try another cable and port and lower the video mode; if sound is missing, set HDMI audio to Stereo uncompressed.
• Making the Series S quieter
  Keep it in the open, use a hard flat surface and clear dust from the vents. A loud console is usually hot, and a console in a tight cabinet will run its fan harder. If the fan is loud with plenty of room, update the console, and contact Xbox support if the noise persists.
• Backing up and updating
  Sign in with your Microsoft account so that saves sync to the cloud, and keep the console in Sleep mode so that it updates overnight. If a game fails to start, check Manage game and add-ons for updates and clear the saved data only after checking that the cloud copy is current.
• Accessories that suit it
  A Seagate expansion card adds fast storage that runs Series X|S games, and a good controller with fresh batteries avoids many connection complaints. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable gets the best from your TV, and a headset with a 3.5 millimetre plug works with the controller. Keep the console on a stand with clear space around it, and use a surge protector to protect it from storms.
• Storage on the 1 terabyte model
  The 1 TB Series S has twice the storage of the original and is usually sold in black, but the console's games still install to the same internal drive, and a big library can fill it. Manage Games and Add-ons shows what takes the space, and you can move games to an external USB drive for older titles, while Series X and S games must run from the internal drive or the expansion card. A fast storage expansion card from Seagate or others matches the internal drive's speed. Keep the console in open air with the vents clear, because it is a small console and gets warm during long sessions.
• Updates and troubleshooting
  Keep the console on automatic updates, and keep some free space so that a large update can install. A console that will not start can often be fixed by a power cycle, holding the power button for ten seconds and unplugging it for a minute. The Xbox support site and the Xbox app have status pages for outages, and a failing console shows an error code on the screen that you can look up.
