What is true of this model and changes how you fix it

These are the properties that decide which procedure applies. Each is read from the manufacturer’s own published figures for this model, not carried over from a sibling that shares its retail name.

Display

6.1-inch all-screen OLED, 2532-by-1170 at 460 ppi. Control positions, reachability and how much fits on screen all change with size, so a procedure written for another model in this line will not map one-to-one onto this one.

Chip

A15 Bionic. The chip generation governs how long this model keeps receiving iOS updates, and it is the underlying reason an app can stop working here while running normally on a newer iPhone — a support-window matter rather than a fault.

Connector

Lightning. Lightning cables and adapters are not interchangeable with the USB-C iPhones and a USB-C cable will not fit at all. Lightning cables also fail internally at the strain point near either connector, which is why a cable swap is the first test for slow or intermittent charging.

Biometric

Face ID — face recognition, not a fingerprint reader. It refuses whenever it is not confident, so darkness, strong backlight, unusual angles and lying down all reduce it, and a case lip or a screen protector over the sensor area disables it outright.

Camera

12MP Main and Ultra Wide. A 12-megapixel main sensor produces much smaller files than the 48-megapixel iPhones, so a storage complaint on this model is less likely to be photos than it would be on a newer one.

Storage options

Sold in 128GB/256GB/512GB. The 128GB entry tier is workable but fills quickly with video, particularly at 4K. Read the storage breakdown before assuming capacity is the problem.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2x2 MIMO. This matters directly to Wi-Fi troubleshooting on this model: the generation determines which bands and features it can use, and a router running a newer standard will fall back rather than refusing — so a phone underperforming a newer sibling on the same network is often specification rather than fault.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth 5.0. Version differences affect range, reconnection behaviour and which accessory features are available — a newer accessory paired to an older Bluetooth version simply operates at the older one's capabilities rather than failing, which is often mistaken for a pairing fault.

Screen brightness

800 nits maximum brightness (typical), with 1200 nits peak (HDR). Brightness is one of the largest single consumers of battery on any phone, so a model rated at a higher figure will spend more when it is actually driven to that level — and outdoor readability complaints are usually this specification rather than a display fault.

Water resistance

Rated IP68 — Apple specifies a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. That is a laboratory figure for a new device in fresh water; it degrades with age, drops and seal disturbance, and Apple does not warrant liquid damage.

SIM

Supports Dual eSIM, with two active eSIMs and storage for eight or more profiles. The default line for calls, for messages and for cellular data are three separate settings, and crossing them produces calls arriving on one number while data or messages use another.

Wireless charging

MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W. Wattage differs across this line, so a charger that fast-charges a newer iPhone may deliver less here — and coil alignment is tight enough that a thick case, a metal plate or a card in the case defeats it entirely.

Fast charging

Apple rates it at up to 50% charge in 30 minutes. That figure assumes an adequate adapter — a low-output adapter, a computer USB port or an old car charger will fall well short of it, which is the usual explanation for a phone that charges far more slowly than the specification suggests.

Battery rating

Apple rates this model at up to 19 hours of video playback. Compare your own runtime against that figure and against your own history — the rating varies widely across this line and a smaller iPhone is not faulty for lasting less than a Max.

Video recording

4K video recording at 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps. Frame rate and resolution are the dominant factor in how quickly video fills storage, and they are also what pushes the phone hardest thermally — sustained high-frame-rate recording is the most common cause of a camera that stops mid-take.

Weight

6.14 ounces (174 grams). Worth knowing where a mount is involved: the heavier models in this line stress adhesive mounts and magnetic car holders considerably more than the lighter ones.

Modem

5G capable. In marginal 5G coverage the phone hands repeatedly between 5G and LTE, which costs more battery and generates more heat than settling on either — so the preferred-network setting is a real diagnostic lever rather than a preference.

Charging

Supports wireless charging. Coil alignment is tighter than it looks and a thick case, a metal plate or a card in the case defeats it entirely — so wireless charging failing while cable charging works is usually the case rather than the phone.

Platform

iOS. Settings paths, permission models and background-execution rules differ substantially from Android, so a procedure written for an Android phone will not map onto this one screen for screen.

Panel

An OLED panel, where each pixel emits its own light. Dark mode genuinely reduces consumption because black pixels are switched off, and a static bright element left on screen for very long periods is the one wear risk this panel type has that LCD does not.
