The phone does not need a special charger; a USB-C cable and a reasonable adapter work, though a faster adapter shortens charging. Avoid charging under a pillow, in direct sun or in a hot car, because heat is what degrades the battery. If a fault is hard to describe, the Apple Support app can run a diagnostic and book a repair.
• Privacy and security settings
  On a new iPhone, set up Face ID, a strong passcode and Find My, and turn on Stolen Device Protection in Settings, Face ID and Passcode, which adds protection if the phone is taken. Check Settings, Privacy and Security for app permissions, and review which apps can use location, the camera and the microphone. These steps take a few minutes and prevent problems later, such as a phone that cannot be tracked after it is lost.
