• Panel — WOLED
  2023 OLED (LG Display WOLED panel) with the Cognitive Processor XR. Self-emissive, perfect blacks, no backlight — a bright-window dim is the Auto Brightness Limiter, not bloom.

  The A80L uses Acoustic Surface Audio, which makes the screen itself a speaker and a center speaker mode lets a soundbar's center channel take over. Sony's eARC works with a soundbar.
• Updating
  Settings, System, About, System Software Update installs software.
• The Cognitive Processor XR
  Sony's processor analyses the picture and sound for what a viewer looks at, adjusting contrast and focus. Some people find it too active, and the Picture menu lets you reduce motion smoothing, sharpness and noise reduction if a film looks artificial.
• A Google TV set
  The A80L runs Google TV, so apps and recommendations come through the Google account. A slow home screen can be improved by clearing an app's data, removing unused apps and keeping the TV's software current; a Wi-Fi problem is checked from the Network settings.
• Stand, wall and sound
  The panel stand can be set to two heights for a soundbar underneath, and the screen vibrates to produce sound, so a loose wall bracket or a shelf that rattles can add noise that sounds like a speaker fault.
• OLED care
  As with any OLED, avoid leaving static bright images for hours and let the standby maintenance run. A mild afterimage after a long gaming session usually fades with normal viewing and a panel refresh.
• PlayStation 5 pairing
  The A80L is one of Sony's sets with a Perfect for PlayStation 5 mode, which switches the picture to a low-delay game setting and applies the console's HDR calibration when it is detected. If the console's menu looks washed out, run the console's HDR adjustment screen once and leave the TV in its automatic game mode.
• Moving the TV or changing the stand
  If you change the stand position or wall-mount the A80L, check that the sound still comes from the screen. Because the panel acts as a speaker, a bracket that touches the back of the screen can damp it, and a gap of a few centimetres behind it avoids the problem.
