PlayStation error codes follow a pattern that tells you where to look. A code that starts with CE is a general console or application error, one that starts with NW is a network error, one that starts with WS is a problem reaching or using PlayStation Network and one that starts with SU is a system software update error. The digits after the letters identify the exact fault, and the PlayStation support page for each code names the cause and the fix, so the first step is always to note the whole code exactly as the screen shows it.

Network codes are usually solved at the router. Restart the console and the router, test the connection from the console's network settings, and check that PlayStation Network is not having an outage by looking at the service status page before changing anything. Codes for the account or the store are usually about sign-in, a payment method or a restriction on the account, and can be cleared by signing out and in again or by updating the details on the account page.
Codes that appear while a game or an update is installing point to storage or the data itself. Check that there is free space on the drive, restart the install and, for a disc, clean it and try again. A code that names a USB device or an external drive usually means that the device is not supported or is failing, so connect it to another port and try another cable. Codes that appear at start-up and stop the console loading may need Safe Mode, which offers options to restart, rebuild the database or restore default settings.
