The electronic oven control (the main board) reported an internal error

Turn off the breaker or unplug the range for 3 minutes, then restore power.

Replace the electronic oven control only if the code comes straight back after the reset. Power reset only (1 minute).

• A one-off control glitch that a reset clears: The code appears once, perhaps after a power flicker, and does not return. Turn off the breaker or unplug the range for 3 minutes, restore power and see whether the code comes back
• An internal electronic oven control error: The code returns straight after the reset and the oven behaves oddly at the same point. The freestanding table says an internal error (1C31, 1C32, 1C7C, 1C8C) needs the electronic oven control replaced once the reset has failed
• A keypad or communication fault standing behind the code (some platforms): The code is 1C4C, or 1C31 and 1C32 on a slide-in range, and a key feels stuck or is dead. The KitchenAid slide-in table reads 1C4C as a communication failure and 1C31 or 1C32 as a cancel key circuit failure, and says to replace the keypad before the control
• A control board fitted with the wrong programming or mismatch: The code appeared right after a board was replaced. Compare the part number of the new board with the model's parts list

The freestanding and slide-in tables say to disconnect power or unplug the range for 3 minutes to reset the electronic oven control. Whirlpool's own pages give a one-minute breaker reset for the same codes; the longer wait does no harm.

If the display shows the code again when power is restored, the tables say the electronic oven control is defective for 1C6C, 1C7C, 1C8C, 1C81 and 1C82.

On the KitchenAid slide-in table 1C4C (communication failure) and 1C31 or 1C32 (cancel key circuit failure) say to replace the keypad if the code displays after the reset, and to replace the electronic oven control only if the problem persists.

Replace the electronic oven control only after the reset and, where the table says so, the keypad. For the F-code style the Whirlpool range table says F1 is a defective electronic oven control: disconnect power and replace it.

1C31, 1C32, 1C4C, 1C6C, 1C7C, 1C81, 1C82, 1C8C; F03, F04, F06; F1 E0, F1 E1, F1 E2, F1 E5, F1 E7, F1 E9; 4D31, 4D32, 3D51.

Are F03, F04, F06 and F1 E0 to F1 E9 the same fault? They name the same board on Whirlpool's pages: the electronic oven control (or appliance control board for F1 E7 and F1 E9) and its wiring.

How long should I leave the power off? The tables say 3 minutes; Whirlpool's own pages say one minute. Longer does no harm.

Is 1C4C a control fault? On the KitchenAid slide-in table it is a communication failure, fixed by the keypad first; Whirlpool's page names the oven control.

Do I need a technician? Resetting is safe for anyone. Opening the control panel and replacing a board should be done with the power off, or by a technician.

Does this apply to Maytag, JennAir and Amana ranges? Yes, on the same Whirlpool platform.

Turn off the breaker or unplug the range before you open the control, and let the oven cool; the control board is at line voltage

If you smell gas on a gas or dual-fuel range, do not operate any switch: leave and call the gas supplier from outside

Whirlpool range code 1D11, 1D12, 1D21, 1D22

The oven is running too hot in Bake, Broil or Clean, or the sensor reports it is

Let the oven cool completely.

Check the sensor wiring and resistance, then look for a shorted element, then the electronic oven control. Power reset only (1 minute).

• An oven temperature sensor that reads wrongly: The oven shows the code when it gets hot in Bake or Broil (1D11, 1D12) or in Clean (1D21, 1D22). Measure the sensor with the range unplugged: 1080 ohms at 70 degrees F is normal
• Loose or damaged sensor wiring: The sensor tests good but the same code stays on. Reconnect any loose wire on the sensor harness and replace a damaged harness
• A bake or broil element that is shorted to the cabinet: An element heats when the oven is off, or the oven overheats in use. The KitchenAid wall oven table says an element that heats when the oven is off indicates a short to the metal cabinet and should be replaced
• The electronic oven control: The sensor, wiring and elements are all fine and the code stays. The tables say to replace the electronic oven control if the sensor resistance is okay

The tables treat these codes as an oven too hot in Bake or Broil (1D11, 1D12) or in Clean (1D21, 1D22). Disconnect power or unplug the range and let the oven cool first.

on the oven temperature sensor harness, replace the harness if it is damaged, and measure the sensor resistance: if it is not 1080 ohms at 70 degrees F, replace the oven temperature sensor.

For a wall oven the KitchenAid table says that if an element heats when the oven is off it is shorted to the metal cabinet and must be replaced, and that an element that overheats only in use should be checked for visible damage once the oven is cool.

If the sensor resistance and the harness connections are okay, replace the electronic oven control.

1D11, 1D12, 1D21 or 1D22.

1080 ohms across the oven temperature sensor at 70 degrees F.

Is it the sensor or the control? The sensor is checked first; the control is the last part on the list.

Turn off the breaker at once and let the oven cool if an element glows with the oven off, since that is a short to the cabinet

Do not run a Clean cycle on an oven that has shown an over-temperature code until the sensor and control have been checked

The oven door latch, its switch or their wiring reported a fault

Open and close the door and see whether the oven light follows it.

Check the latch wiring, then replace the door switch or the latch assembly. Power reset only (1 minute).

• A door switch and lock switch that disagree: The oven light does not follow the door, or the code is 4D11, 4D12, 4D51, 4D52 or F5 E0. Open and close the door and watch the oven light; the tables say a light that does not turn on and off means the door switch is at fault
• A door lock assembly that is defective or has loose wiring: The latch does not lock or unlock and the code is 9D11 to 9D62, F5 E1, F05 or F9-x. Unplug the range and check the wire harness on the lock assembly; the tables say to reconnect loose wires and replace a damaged harness
• A lock assembly that is visibly damaged: The latch arm is visibly bent or broken when you look. The tables say to replace the door lock assembly if it is visibly damaged
• A door that will not seal because of the hinges or gasket (F5 E5): A Clean cycle stops with F5 E5 because the oven has not reached self-clean temperature after 30 minutes. Whirlpool's F5 E5 page names the door hinges or door gasket as the likely cause of that failure to reach temperature

The Whirlpool range table for F5/E0 says to test the door switch by opening and closing the door and seeing whether the oven light turns on and off. If it does not, replace the oven door switch.

Disconnect power or unplug the range, reconnect any loose wires on the oven door lock assembly wire harness and replace the harness if it is damaged. The freestanding table gives the same steps for the 9D codes.

Check the door lock assembly for visible damage and replace it if broken. For a Clean-mode code (9D31, 9D32) the freestanding table says the lock assembly error in Clean mode is handled the same way.

Look at the door hinges and gasket; Whirlpool's page names them and states no further step, so a door that does not close squarely needs adjusting or a new gasket.

4D11 to 4D52; 9D11 to 9D62; F05, F5, F5 E0 to F5 E3, F5 E7, F7 E0, F7 E1, F9-1 to F9-3, F1-A, F1-C; F5 E5.

Can I clean the oven in the meantime? No; a lock fault can leave the door held or unlocked in a Clean cycle.

Do not force a locked oven door in a Clean cycle; the oven is far above cooking temperature and the lock is holding it shut for that reason

Unplug the range and let the oven cool before you touch the lock assembly

Whirlpool range code C81, C82, C83, H, Indicator Flashing, Indicator or Hot Light On

A cooktop surface area is hot, has overheated, or a key is held down

Turn off the cooktop and let it cool.

Clean the touch panel and reset the power if a light keeps flashing. The one documented check: turn off the oven if it is operating.

• A cooktop surface area that overheated (C81, C82, C83): The automatic shutoff turned off a surface cooking area. Whirlpool says wait 5 minutes for it to cool and turn the cooktop back on
• A surface area still too hot to touch (H): An H shows in the heat setting window after the element is off. Whirlpool says allow the cooktop to cool completely first
• Keys held down or debris on the touch panel (indicator flashing): An indicator light flashes on a smoothtop glass cooktop panel. Whirlpool says one or more keys are permanently pressed; remove objects and wipe the panel
• A hot light on after the controls are off: The hot light stays on for a long time after cooking. Allow the cooktop to cool; the light is a hot-surface warning

Whirlpool says to turn off the oven if it is operating, let the surface cool for 5 minutes (C81 to C83), and allow the cooktop to cool when an H shows.

For a flashing indicator on a smoothtop cooktop, make sure all controls are off, remove objects from the control area, and thoroughly clean the touch control panel.

If an indicator or H persists, turn the breaker off for one minute, restore power and verify cooktop operation.

Whirlpool specifies a 1 minute power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

C81, C82, C83, H, indicator flashing, hot light on.

None.

A soft cloth for the touch panel.

What does H mean? A surface area is too hot to touch, even after it has been turned off.

What does a flashing indicator mean? On a smoothtop cooktop, one or more keys are permanently pressed; on an induction cooktop the controls may not be set correctly.

Do not touch a surface that shows H; it is too hot to touch safely

Turn the cooktop off and unplug or switch off the breaker if smoke rises from a cooking area or the panel

Whirlpool range code Call Service, Press Cancel to Reset, Feature Not Available, Fault Detected, F8

The control detected a fault or a key sequence it could not run

Press Cancel to clear the display.

Reset the power; arrange service if the message returns. Power reset only (1 minute).

• A one-off fault the control cleared: The message shows once and goes away when you press Cancel. Press the Cancel key or pad, as Whirlpool says
• A fault that returns: Call Service shows again soon after you press Cancel. Reset the power at the breaker for one minute and run a bake cycle
• A cook function the control could not run (Feature Not Available, Fault Detected): A message scrolls while you program a cook cycle. Follow the directions on the display, such as PRESS ENTER TO TRY AGAIN or DISABLE POWER TO CLEAR

Whirlpool says the Call Service message is displayed when a fault or error has been detected, and to press the Cancel button or pad to reset.

If Call Service is displayed after pressing Cancel, turn the breaker off for one minute, turn it on, start a bake cycle and monitor the oven for one minute.

Whirlpool says the message scrolls when a fault is detected while you are programming a cook cycle; follow the displayed directions.

Call Service, Press Cancel to Reset, Feature Not Available, Fault Detected, F8.

What does Call Service mean? Whirlpool says a fault or error has been detected; press Cancel to reset.

What does Feature Not Available or Fault Detected mean? A message that scrolls when a fault is detected while you are programming a cook cycle.

Is F8 a code? Whirlpool documents F8 without a stated cause; treat it as a fault to reset and report.

Whirlpool range code F1, F2, F3, F5, F6

A two-digit code from an older control; the sources name the oven temperature sensor, the oven control or the door latch

Reset the power for a minute and note which two-digit code returns.

Use the sensor, control or door page for the component the code names. Power reset only (1 minute).

• A two-digit fault code from an older Whirlpool control: The display shows F1, F2, F3, F5, F6 or F8 with no second character. Read the code's row below for the meaning each source gives
• A defective electronic oven control (F1): The control fails as soon as power is restored at power-up. The range table says to disconnect power and replace the electronic oven control
• An oven temperature sensor or over-temperature condition (F2, F3): The oven overheats badly or will not heat at all. Whirlpool names the oven temperature sensor, the control or the wiring for F2; test the sensor as on the sensor page
• A door latch problem (F5): The latch will not lock or unlock when the door is closed. Whirlpool names the oven door latch assembly, the door latch switches or the wiring

Whirlpool gives a one-minute breaker reset for these codes: turn the breaker off for one minute, restore power and monitor the oven.

Whirlpool's pages name the oven temperature sensor for F1 and F2, the oven control for F3 and F6, the door latch assembly for F5, and give no cause for F8; the older Sears range table reads F1 as a defective electronic oven control.

Whirlpool range code FEE6, FEE7, FEE8, FBE1, FBE2

A bake or broil element circuit fault, or a code Whirlpool documents only as a reset

Let the oven cool and reset the power.

Check the element and its wiring; arrange service if the code returns. Power reset only (1 minute).

• A bake element circuit fault (FEE6): The oven will not bake at all and FEE6 shows. Whirlpool names the main cavity bake element or the associated wiring
• A broil element circuit fault (FEE7): The oven will not broil at all and FEE7 shows. Whirlpool names the main cavity broil element or the associated wiring
• A code Whirlpool documents only as a reset (FBE1, FBE2, FEE8): The code is one of these and the oven otherwise works. Whirlpool's pages for these give a one-minute breaker reset and no cause

Whirlpool gives a one-minute breaker reset: turn the breaker off for one minute, restore power and monitor the oven for one minute.

With the oven cool and the breaker off, look at the bake or broil element and its terminals for a blister, a break or a burnt connector.

Whirlpool publishes no repair beyond the reset, so a code that returns is for a technician.

Whirlpool range code Locked, Lock, Loc, Lock-Electric

The oven or cooktop Control Lock is on

Touch and hold Start/Enter, or Lock on a cooktop, to unlock.

Unlock the control; nothing is broken. Whirlpool documents these checks for this code: unlock the Oven Control and Oven Door; and refer to the Owner's Manual for more information.

• The oven control lock is on: LOC shows on the display whenever any pad is pressed. Whirlpool says LOC appears whenever any command pad is pressed while the control is locked
• The cooktop lock is on: The cooktop keys do nothing except Power and Off. Whirlpool says a locked cooktop locks out all keypads except Power and Off
• The lock was switched on by someone by accident: Nobody remembers turning the lock on and the oven will not respond. Whirlpool says the lock feature is preset unlocked, so a person or a cleaning wipe must have set it

Whirlpool says the oven and timer must be off; touch and hold Start/Enter for 5 seconds, a single tone sounds and LOC appears; repeat to unlock and LOC disappears.

Whirlpool says to touch and hold the Lock pad for 3 seconds to unlock the cooktop surface controls.

Turn the breaker off for one minute, restore power, and then try the documented unlock sequence again.

Whirlpool specifies a 1 minute power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

Locked, Lock, LOC; cooktop Lock.

What does LOC mean? Whirlpool says the control lock is on; the pads and the oven door are locked to avoid unintended use.

Can I lock a running oven? No; Whirlpool says the controls and door cannot be locked while the oven is in use.

How do I unlock the cooktop? Touch and hold Lock for 3 seconds.

Unplug the range before you open the panel

Arrange service if the lock will not release with the documented hold

Whirlpool range code PUSH, PSH, Flashing Time, Clock, 12:00, Power Loss, Enter Time

The control is waiting for Start, or power was interrupted and the clock needs setting

Press Start within 5 seconds of choosing a function.

Set the time of day; a message that will not clear needs a power reset. The one documented check: press Start.

• Start was not pressed in time: PUSH or PSH shows after you chose a function. Press Start within 5 seconds, as Whirlpool says
• Power was interrupted: The clock flashes or shows 12:00 or POWER LOSS. Press Cancel and set the time of day, as Whirlpool says
• A control that will not clear: PSH stays on even after you press the Start pad. Reset the power at the breaker for one minute

Whirlpool says the Start pad begins any oven function, that PUSH or PSH appears if Start is not pressed within 5 seconds, and that a function is cancelled if Start is not pressed within 1 minute after a keypad press.

Whirlpool says that when power is first supplied, or after an interruption, the display shows Time, 12:00 or POWER LOSS; press Cancel to clear and set the time of day.

Turn the breaker off for one minute, turn it on and monitor for one minute.

Whirlpool specifies a 1 minute power interruption for this code, not an arbitrary one.

PUSH, PSH; flashing Time, Clock, 12:00, Power Loss, Enter Time.

What does PUSH or PSH mean? Whirlpool says Start was not pressed within 5 seconds of choosing a function.

What does a flashing 12:00 mean? Power was interrupted; press Cancel and set the time of day.

Arrange service if the message returns after the power reset

Whirlpool range code Sabbath, Sab, 5Ab, 5A7

Sabbath Mode is on

Cancel Sabbath Mode using the sequence in the manual.

Leave Sabbath Mode off when you want normal oven behavior. The one documented check: cancel Sabbath Mode.

• Sabbath Mode was turned on: Sab, 5Ab or 5A7 shows and only Bake runs. Whirlpool says Sabbath Mode keeps the oven on in a Bake setting until turned off, with all other cooking and cleaning cycles disabled
• A misunderstanding of silent behavior: The oven light and tones do nothing when the door opens. Whirlpool says no tones sound and the light does not turn on or off with the door in this mode
• Sabbath Mode was enabled in the settings: Sabbath Mode is factory set to disabled, yet the mode is now available and on. Refer to your owner's manual for the sequence that disables or enables Sabbath Mode on your model

Whirlpool says to refer to your owner's manual for the sequence to cancel Sabbath Mode; the mode is factory set to disabled but can be enabled.

In Sabbath Mode Whirlpool lists the 12-hour shutoff, tones, all cooking and cleaning modes except Bake, timers, cooktop lockout, Energy Save and the warming zone as disabled, and all keys except Start, Cancel or Off.

If the mode will not cancel by the documented sequence, switch the breaker off briefly, restore power, and try the sequence again from the start.

Sabbath, Sab, 5Ab, 5A7.

What does Sab mean? Sabbath Mode is on.

Why is the oven light not working? Whirlpool says the oven light does not turn on or off with the door in Sabbath Mode.
