Overheating and fan noise relate to dust and placement, so keep the vents clear and give the console room. Disc problems apply only to models with a drive. On a PlayStation, the checks that fix most problems are simple. For a console that will not turn on, unplug the power cable for a few minutes and try again, and for a game that crashes, update the game and the system software and check the free space on the drive. A beeping or a blue light that stays on is the console's own signal, and Safe Mode, started by holding the power button until the second beep, lets you rebuild the database, update the system or restore default settings.

Online problems are usually router problems: try a wired connection, restart the router and run the console's connection test. Controller issues are often a low battery or a pairing fault, solved by connecting the controller with a USB cable and pressing the PS button. Back up saved data to the cloud or a USB drive before a reset or reinstall.
